Summary:

The Crane Operator I works within Dock Operations and will operate the dock’s Cranes safely and efficiently. Other duties of the dock worker are that they will secure vessels to moorings, load, unload, and transport materials on and off vessels and/or from dock to storage site by performing the following duties and other duties as assigned:


Key Responsibilities:

  • Reads work orders, emails, and follows oral instructions from Dock Operations Manager.
  • Operates mechanical boom and cable/tower cable equipment to lift and move materials, machines, or products
  • Deploys, retracts, inspects, and maintains oil boom around vessels and docks as needed.
  • Monitors tidal fluctuation and reports the need to make necessary line adjustments accordingly.
  • Manipulates or depresses crane controls, such as pedals, levers, and buttons to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement according to verbal or signal instructions from the personnel on the ground.
  • Monitors the compound’s propane tanks for fullness.
  • Maintains good housekeeping in work areas.
  • Connects and disconnects shore power.
  • Counts, weighs, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheet.
  • Connects, adjusts, and removes vessel gangways as needed.
  • Coordinates prior to crane operations and agreed upon signaling system. Signal’s crane or hoisting operators to move load to destination.
  • Attaches lifting equipment to materials and conveys load to destination safely and securely.
  • Inspects crane rail and baloney track for obstructions when crane is in use.
  • Packs materials onto flatbeds or into containers and installs strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
  • Visually inspects the cranes for hydraulic leaks, cracked or broken electrical cables, debris and/or obstructions.
  • Clamps sections of portable conveyor together or places conveyor sections on blocks or boxes to facilitate movement of materials or products.
  • Loads and unloads materials or garbage onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves by hand or with material handling equipment.
  • Maintains visual and radio communications with ground operators according to best practices and site safety regulations and respond to questions and instructions clearly and quickly. (Must learn and respond to hand signals.)
  • Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, equipment, pallets, or other containers.
  • Stacks or assembles materials into bundles or on pallets and bands bundles/pallets together.
  • Maintains the docks by keeping them free of debris (cardboard, pallets, and garbage).
  • Opens containers and inspects and sorts cargo, if applicable, before loading and unloading.
  • Moves product and other materials to and from storage and production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, ships, and containers, by hand or using trucks, tractors, and other equipment.
  • Performs prestart inspection and post-start inspections ensuring the machinery is safe to use and will report any mechanical issues to the Dock Operations Manager immediately.
  • Places, removes, and empties dumpsters daily to mitigate environmental concerns.
  • Securely connects and disconnects incoming/departing vessels to moorings.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Notifies designated personnel of any environmental or safety incidents or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and/or safety trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Acquires knowledge of Trident’s Environmental and Safety Policies by completing required training programs and performing designated work activities in accordance with training and procedures/work instructions.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • One to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • General experience operating cranes of various sizes preferred.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Comfortable climbing 20 feet of stairs/ladders to enter crane.
  • Current NCCCO Crane Operators License for qualified equipment
  • Mobile Crane Operator” certification
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Must be able to pass basic boating safety course within three months of hiring.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to perform complex math problems.


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is frequently required to climb or balance.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.

The employee moves objects

  • Frequently up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly up to 10 pounds

Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
