Job Description
  • A minimum of five years of school nursing experience. Recent experience as a lead, head or supervising nurse is preferred.
  • Coordinates, maintains and submits records and reports required by District policy and state agencies
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with faculty, staff and administrators
  • Instructs school nurses in the operation of testing and other medical equipment.
  • Advises administrators and school nurse and health staff on budget development and the purchase and distribution of health equipment and supplies
  • Serves as a member of the District’s Health and Wellness Committees
  • Remains current with respect to best practices and emerging issues in school health, safety and wellness, and recommends policies, procedures and practices to promote safe and healthy school environments
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. A Master’s Degree in a health-related field is preferred
  • Seeks to find better health care procedures through sharing of ideas and continuous evaluation of school nursing practices.
  • Supports administrators in recruiting, hiring, inducting and training new school nurses and health office clerks
  • Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR/AED) and Basic Life Support (BLS) from a recognized provider (e.g. Red Cross, American Heart Association, etc.)
  • Supports school nurses and staff in developing and implementing care plans for students with complex medical needs
  • Assists school administrators in the evaluation of school nurses and assists the Director of Special Services or designee in evaluating the District float nurse and health office clerks
  • Establishes and manages required health screening programs
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Organizes opportunities for staff development through in-service education
  • Such other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Special Services or designee
  • Assists the Special Services Department in scheduling and coordinating the assignment of substitute nurses, including 1:1 nurses
  • Participates in PPT and Section 504 meetings as requested
  • Accepts responsibility for personal professional development and growth.
  • Provides ongoing, high-quality training and professional development to the District’s school health and nursing staff in accordance with best practices and legal requirements
  • A current Connecticut license to practice as a registered nurse.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and bending.
  • Supervises and supports the District’s school nurses and health office clerks
  • Regularly communicates and collaborates with the District’s medical advisor as well as the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the Connecticut State Department of Education, the Farmington Valley Health District (FVHD), and other agencies on matters related to school health, safety and wellness
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Routinely visits school health offices to support school nurse and health staff and to ensure professional behavior that is ethical and in accordance with legal requirements and best practice
  • Provides direct school nursing services when necessary due to nurse absences
  • Performs all related responsibilities and duties as detailed in the job description for School Nurse.
  • Ensures school nurse protocols, including those in the District’s nursing manual, are current and align with legal requirements and best practices for school heath, safety and wellness
  • Assists in the coordination of CPR/AED and BLS training opportunities for school nurses, faculty and staff
  • Performs all the regular evaluative assessments of student health and duties listed in the School Nurse job description.
