Description


SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of the Learning Resources Center, this position optimizes the user experience regarding the access and discovery of library resources and services. The Discovery and Access Librarian develops workflows and services which enhance access to all our library materials.


Principle Duties And Responsibilities


  • Continually review library collection for currency and relevance to deselect outdated and damaged library materials.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend methodologies, standards, and software for the creation and preservation of digital collections and institutional repository.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports for the Learning Resources Center, Logan University, accrediting agencies, and library-affiliated entities.
  • Responsible for original, complex and copy cataloging of materials in all formats which may include books, media, anatomical models, and electronic resources, and keeping up to date on current cataloging and metadata standards.
  • Act as Site Coordinator for MOBIUS consortium and database administrator for the library’s integrated library system (ILS)
  • Facilitate the orderly operation of the integrated Library Management System including interpreting policies and procedures, updating training manuals, and providing initial and ongoing training to staff.
  • Serve on faculty task forces and committees and participate in regional and national professional organizations.
  • Assist in the oversight of record keeping and statistics gathering functions of the Learning Resources Center.
  • Develop policies regarding preservation practices, reproduction and fees on images, copyright issues, and digitization.
  • Prepare electronic resources MARC records for data loads.
  • Shape the library’s technological future by exploring and advocating for user-centered library systems and applications,
  • Oversee the technical services operation of the Learning Resources Center processing, cataloging, and maintaining of materials.
  • Manage Archives and Special Collection by providing services related to preservation, conservation, digitization, and access, including rare books, photographs, local history, manuscripts, archival book collection, and realia items.
  • Process donations by identifying those relevant to the collection, accessioning archives and/or cataloging them.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Learning Resources Center.
  • Act as liaison between library assistants and director by training and monitoring work progress.


Qualifications


COMPETENCIES: To perform the job successfully, an individual should be able to have good interpersonal and written communication skills, including negotiation and presentation skills. Must be able to interact with people at different levels in the University in a professional manner. Must be a team player. Must react well under pressure. Must be able to prioritize, plan work activities, and multitask. Experience with the Sierra system and cataloging different formats.


QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum requirement of a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution and three years of experience in library work with an emphasis in online migration and digitization of collection. Candidate must meet deadlines and can work in a collaborative environment. Background in biological/health sciences preferred. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals and technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Knowledge and experience with pertinent automation and technology. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, staff, and students. Basic math skills required. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations where limited standardization exists.


Computer Skills: Computer experience required. Spreadsheets and database software experience preferred. Familiarity with Office 365 and technology is preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and to use hands to type on computer and to handle books, files, documents, etc. Must be able to talk and hear to answer phones and when assisting students and other library patrons. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and to stoop or kneel while filing documents, and shelving books or checking them out. The employee must frequently lift books weighing from 10 to 30 pounds and occasionally lift books weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to push carts weighing up to 100 lbs. Close vision needed to use computer and to read shelves. Color vision is required when using research information databases to distinguish different screens. Must have distance vision and depth perception for safety purposes when pushing carts full of books.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, and fluctuations in room temperature. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud.
