Job Description
Position Title: Director, Student Recreation Center
Reports To: Associate Executive Director
Payroll Classification: Salaried, Exempt
Starting Salary Range $85,386.00 - 115,776.00

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The Student Recreation Center Director is responsible for the operation of the Student Recreation Center and the management of a comprehensive campus recreation program including: informal recreation; personal training; aquatics; learn to swim lessons ; group exercise; instructional recreation; intramural sports; outdoor adventures; climbing wall; an six-week summer day-camp experience (Titan Youth Sports Camp), and American Red Cross Certification Programs (including water safety instruction, First Aid, CPR/AED, and lifeguard training).
The Student Recreation Center Director serves as an out-of-classroom educator, working closely with other members of the ASI professional staff and members of the university community in delivering educational experiences and learning outcomes to student participants, student employees, and student leaders associated with the Student Recreation programs.
Programs and Facilities
  • Outdoor Adventure and Climbing Wall Coordinator
  • Creating an expectation that staff stay current with campus recreation and fitness industry standards and trends.
  • Provides employees with an orientation and introduction to each area.
  • Memberships and Outreach
  • Ensures the delivery of a comprehensive campus recreation program by:
  • Provide leadership and direction for the following programs run by their respective coordinator:
  • Recommending and implementing program, policy, and procedure changes, needs, and ideas to enhance the utilization of the SRC.
  • Ensuring dissemination of facility and program information accordingly including proper promotions of memberships, programming dates, special events, and deadlines
  • Ensures that each department establishes guidelines and all staff in department follow guidelines.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for all operations in the recreation programs and facilities.
  • Developing programming alternatives for revenue growth.
  • Analyzing and establishing proper staffing levels to meet program expectations.
  • Hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating a highly qualified and professional staff
  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with various Associated Students Inc., CSUF and University departments.
  • Ensures development, coordination, and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan by:
  • Hires, onboards, and supervises the following staff positions:
  • Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with and between campus recreation staff, ASI staff, and University/Department staff.
  • Responsible for the effective management of the annual budget by:
  • Intramurals and Camp Coordinator
  • Leading the planning, organization, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of all campus recreation programs and services by:
  • Assessing and responding to the campus community’s needs and wants in recreational programs and services
  • Meets with and appropriately responds to students, faculty, staff regarding questions, concerns, suggestions, and complaints about facilities, programs, and services.
  • Maintaining a master facility schedule for all internal recreation programs, campus reservations, and external reservations
  • Ensuring all expenditures are consistent with the intent of the budget.
  • Fitness and Wellness
  • Aquatics and Learn-to-Swim Lessons
  • Oversees all purchasing and inventory control, including but not limited to sports specific equipment, vehicles, computers, supplies, etc.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Building Engineering and Facilities develops, reviews, and revises long range replacement schedules and obtains cost estimates to ensure accuracy in budget forecasting.
  • Aquatics Coordinator
  • Overseeing the ongoing assessment of programs using techniques such as participant evaluations, written surveys, focus groups and informal discussions.
  • Defining target markets in collaboration with the department Coordinator and the Associate Executive Director.
  • Fitness and Wellness Coordinator
  • Ensures that all employees are meeting Associated Students Inc., CSUF customer service guidelines.
  • Adhering to established SRC reservation policies and procedures.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, assigned committees, in-service education session and other organizational or corporate meetings.
  • Providing access to master facility schedule
  • Providing strategic analysis of all Titan Rec budget areas and ensures revenues are enhanced and operations are managed in an efficient manner.
  • Ensures all corporate and department deadlines are met and procedures are followed by Coordinators and staff.
  • Developing positive working relationship between internal users (recreation), campus users (ASI and campus departments), and potential external users
  • Intramurals and Titan Youth Sports Camp
  • Conducts regular staff performance evaluations.
  • Ensuring timely preparation and approvals of annual budget
  • Operations Coordinator
  • Evaluating and making changes to programming and facilities that stay up to date with trends and improve the program for the future using member feedback and assessment of impact.
  • Submits all paperwork within assigned time frames.
  • Analyzing demographic profile of current participants and program usage
  • Developing and recommending appropriate mid-year budget revisions
  • Ensures proper facility scheduling and operation of Student Recreation Center, intramural fields, and pool by:
  • Overseeing the maintenance, tracking, and reconciliation of the operating budget to ensure adherence to budget guidelines and deadlines, and ensure year-end results meet approved
  • Developing professional quality marketing and promotional material through coordination with the Marketing, Communications and Design department
  • Membership and Outreach Coordinator
  • Developing and recommending annual capital expenditure requests
  • Outdoor Adventures and Climbing Wall
  • Developing and recommending an annual operating budget
  • Coordinating landscape maintenance with ASI Building Engineering
  • Ensures the completion of a comprehensive list of all accidents and emergencies that are likely to occur in the Recreation facilities; establishes emergency action plans for actual occurrence of each respective event.
  • Responsible for effective Safety/Risk Management plans for the emergency care of staff and participants of the SRC and Campus Recreation programs.
  • Conducting regular “mock” injury/accident drills
  • Developing and maintaining safety audit programs for each facility/program
  • Developing long range equipment and facility repair and replacement schedules
  • Developing cleaning, maintenance, and repair schedules for emergency, daily, weekly, quarterly, and yearly needs
  • Ensures all recreation operations and programs are conducted with safety of staff and participants as first priority, and in accordance with the ASI Injury and Illness Prevention Plan by:
  • Providing First Aid/CPR/AED training
  • Conducting comprehensive on-site safety inspections of all facilities and programs on a regular basis. Ensure all areas are clean, in good repair, and in compliance with respective safety codes.
  • Tracking all work orders for unanticipated repair and maintenance
  • Ensures satisfactory maintenance and appearance of the Student Recreation Center, pool, and equipment is maintained at all times by:
  • Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately
  • Developing standards for use of HVAC and lighting to optimize energy efficiency.
  • Planned and preventative maintenance programs
  • Ensuring electronic or written liability and release/waiver information outlining pertinent safety standards to customers prior to participation is provided.
  • Providing employees with regular, appropriate, and pertinent safety training
  • Reports accidents to Associate Executive Director and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence.
  • Requiring all staff to meet minimum qualifications and certifications within the job description.
  • Serving as a member of the ASI Safety Committee and participating in the development and implementation of a comprehensive organizational safety program
  • Reviewing and staying current on recommended safety levels and standards arising from recent court decisions; reviewing pertinent litigation via publications such as the Law Reporter, Sports, and the Courts, etc.
  • Managing contracted service providers to meet standards.
  • Regularly scheduled facility walk-throughs
  • Ensuring appropriate safety, liability, and warning signage is appropriately posted.
  • Coordinating all repair/maintenance with ASI Building Engineering
  • Coordinating building systems operations/repair/maintenance with ASI Building Engineering department

Education
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Baccalaureate degree required from an accredited college or university.
Master’s degree in recreation management, college student personnel administration, or related field of study preferred.
Experience
Must have a minimum of five years progressively responsible administrative experience in the recreation or closely related field, preferably in college or university recreation programs. Experience shall include managerial and programming responsibilities.
Knowledge And Abilities
  • Ability to stay current on fitness/recreation trends.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques of recreational facilities management, fiscal and personnel management and recreational programming for a diverse campus population.

  • Knowledge of the history and role of campus recreation programs.

Special Requirements
  • Employment will be contingent on a satisfactory employment history and criminal background investigation.
  • May be required to use personal phone for business related activities.
  • Required to be First Aid, CPR, and AED certified within 30 days of hire.
  • Subject to DMV Pull program requiring valid driver’s license, current auto insurance be on file at all times and must meet CSURMA driving standards. May be required to drive occasionally as needed.
  • Required to be a Mandatory Reporter and sign ASI Mandatory Reporter Form.
