Pregis is executing a plan to accelerate company growth, including a series of critical corporate initiatives: a) develop and assist in the implementation of the Pregis Production System to drive operational excellence across the 18 Protective Product facility network, b) support the Pregis Quality Management System across all facets of the operation, and c) develop and drive capital investments in strategic growth objectives, both organically and through acquisitions, d) Leads the continuous improvement & lean manufacturing efforts across the network.


The Director of Process Engineering will have experience in a manufacturing company of relevant size and complexity; ~$1.4 billion revenue and multiple manufacturing locations with multiple different manufacturing processes, and high-volume, high SKU, customized product mix. As the Director of Process Engineering, the primary role will be to develop the engineering team, identify process improvement opportunities, develop solutions supported by detailed analysis, lead engineering projects, incorporate newest technologies, lead the implementation of standardized processes, instill a metrics driven approach, and creating a culture of continuous improvement to enable future growth. The position will have 6 direct reports in engineering with dotted line responsibilities to process technical resources at the plants.


Job Functions


Leadership/Supervisory Role


  • Manage of team building and provide technical leadership for the design and implementation of features, processes, and improvements.
  • Directs and manages the engineering department responsible for optimization and implementation of manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to attract, train and develop key talent, particularly in the Process Technical & Lean Manufacturing roles
  • Overseeing resources, staffing, and the enhancement of the Process Engineering team to ensure appropriate processes and technical expertise in all areas of Protective Packaging.
  • As the Pregis Production System (PPS) is rolled out across the Protective Products network of plants, the Process Engineering team will drive the PPS CI efforts.
  • Participate on the installation, testing, operation, and maintenance requirements of facilities and equipment, making sure all process technical tasks are executed by the personnel responsible.

  • Monitors and manages safety, quality, production, customer satisfaction and budget performance in order to meet/exceed expectations.


Strategy


  • Create functional strategies and specific objectives for the Process Engineering Team.
  • Improve Quality performance by working with Plant leadership teams to reduce Quality complaints. Work with Quality Manager to implement Pregis’ Quality Management System, with clear Quality metrics and processes in alignment with corporate standards.
  • Direct the negotiation of technical contracts and also prepare the company’s budget, bids, and contracts as needed.
  • Drive the strategy, architecture, and development of the business solutions.
  • Develop and implement engineering strategies meant for the development of technological tools and processes required for current and future development.
  • Set scientific and technical goals in the confines of the organization with the aid of management.
  • Organize and manage projects, making detailed plans that work towards the fulfillment of a set objective.
  • Examine technology, organizational resources and the demands of the market in order to plan or give procedures for projects which are practicable or possible.


Collaboration


  • Management of technical integrations and relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with management, production, and product engineer staff on the possible requirements and procedures for process capability & optimization.
  • Coordinates and communicate development activities and priorities in order to ensure the successful completion of project objectives.
  • Collaborate with the senior engineering product development leadership in defining long-term organizational strategies and roadmaps.
  • Work with Director of Facilities & Maintenance to identify capital investment opportunities for quality and productivity improvements across the production network.


Lean Continuous Improvement


  • Support plant leadership teams on the development and execution of plans to minimize production costs through effective use of manpower, equipment, facilities, materials, and capital in order to exceed customer expectations and EBITDA targets.
  • Work with VP of Manufacturing Transformation to develop and implement formalized Pregis Production System across all manufacturing operations with particular focus on improving productivity, increase reliability, reduce waste, and improve quality. System should be scalable to propagate to other Pregis operations and future acquisitions.
  • Follow up on the business procedures, policies, and associated tools in order to develop processes that are more efficient and ensure conformity with the business’s policies and overall objectives.
  • Manage multi-site operations, packaging, engineering, and Lean/continuous improvement.
  • Take initiative to explore and implement innovative technologies within the business in order to improve the business’s internal platforms as well as customer experience.

Job Requirements


Education / Experience: Minimum level of education and experience required.


  • Candidate must have effective time management, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Candidate must have exceptional written, verbal, public speaking and communication skills.
  • Critical Thinking. Good logic and reasoning skills to be able to identify weaknesses and strengths of alternative solutions or approaches to problems.
  • Candidate must work well collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Candidate must have a BS preferably in Mechanical, Industrial or Chemical Engineering with manufacturing concentration.
  • Candidate must have demonstrated personal and professional effectiveness in leading a large cross-functional initiative across a complex organization.
  • Strong people management/leadership skills; demonstrated ability to develop and mentor self-perpetuating teams.
  • Strong business acumen and analytical skills
  • Frequent travel required.
  • Skills & Attributes:
  • Cultural Fit. Nimble and entrepreneurial in nature – past success in an environment with limited resources. Demonstrated collaboration with the executive team and comfortable working at all levels within an intense, fast[1]paced environment.
  • Candidate must have a minimum of 7-10 years of full-time relevant experience at a manufacturing company leading process technical and lean manufacturing.
  • Excellent work ethic, self-starter


Mobility
  • Geographic location & expected travel.
  • Travel will be 60%+
  • Chicagoland area or virtual home location depending on reasonable access to a suitable regional airport.
