Position: Director ofStrategic Sourcing

Position Summary: The Director of Strategic Sourcing leads and oversees strategic sourcing initiatives to optimize costs, ensure quality ingredients and materials, and drive operational excellence. Leads all strategic sourcing activities, including, but not limited to, primary areas such as commodity market monitoring, layering contract coverage and contract negotiations, supply assurance and supplier relationship management, cost optimization and value creation, and financial and budgeting. Works and collaborates cross-functionally on prioritization of initiatives in support of business objectives and continuously seek opportunities to maximize the total value delivered.

Responsibilities:

  • Commodity Market Monitoring. Monitor commodity markets relevant to the bakery's ingredient and material requirements, including currency fluctuations, and economic factors to proactively manage pricing risks. Stay updated on market trends, price fluctuations, supply-demand dynamics, and regulatory changes. Analyze market data and provide insights to inform sourcing decisions and negotiations. Identify opportunities to leverage market conditions, such as bulk purchasing or forward contracts, to secure favorable pricing. Provide Senior Leadership Team real-time commodity movement information with recommendations and provide a monthly Commodity Update.
  • Commercialization Process.Deep involvement in the commercialization process for new bakery products, collaborating with R&D, QA, finance, sales, and production teams. Provide sourcing expertise and guidance during product development, ensuring the availability of ingredients and materials for successful commercialization. Conduct supplier assessments to evaluate their capacity to meet the requirements of new bakery products. Collaborate with suppliers to source ingredients and packaging materials that align with product specifications and customer preferences. Manage supplier relationships to ensure timely delivery of materials for product launches and promotions.
  • Strategic Sourcing Strategy. Develop and execute a comprehensive strategic sourcing strategy aligned with the bakery's business goals and growth objectives. Identify opportunities for cost savings, quality improvement, and operational efficiencies through strategic sourcing initiatives. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align sourcing strategies with business requirements and priorities.
  • Supplier Relationship Management.Build and maintain strategic relationships with suppliers, negotiating favorable contracts and terms of agreement. Evaluate and assess supplier performance, ensuring adherence to quality standards, delivery schedules, and pricing commitments. Lead supplier development programs to drive collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. Develop and implement supplier scorecards and performance metrics to ensure accountability and optimize supplier relationships. Work to assess and qualify secondary Suppliers on all Ingredients and Packaging. Monitor and manage the contractual balance and performance of supplier agreements. Conduct regular contract audits to ensure accurate tracking of quantities, pricing, etc. Provide recommendations and insights to management regarding contract balance management strategies and improvements.
  • Cost Optimization and Value Creation.Develop and implement cost optimization strategies without compromising quality and service levels. Conduct comprehensive cost analyses, including total cost of ownership (TCO) evaluations, to identify areas for cost reduction. Drive value engineering initiatives, seeking alternatives or substitutions to reduce costs while maintaining product integrity.
  • Financial and Budgeting. Develop and manage the strategic sourcing budget, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives. Collaborate with finance and accounting teams to establish accurate cost models and forecasts. Monitor and analyze expenditures related to sourcing activities, identifying areas for cost optimization. Develop and implement strategies to reduce costs while maintaining quality and service levels. Track and report financial performance, including, but not limited to, Purchase Price Variance (PPV), Raw and Packaging Inventory levels, Commodity Contract & Hedge Status, Lead Raw and Packaging Cost Saving Team, Manage Obsolete and Slow Moving (OSMI) Ingredients and Packaging and providing regular updates to senior management.
  • Hedging and Contract Negotiations. Develop and execute hedging strategies to manage price risks associated with key commodities. Assess the feasibility and benefits of fixed price-volume contracting and hedging instruments, such as futures contracts or options, and recommend appropriate actions. Collaborate with finance and legal teams to negotiate supplier contracts with favorable pricing terms and risk mitigation provisions. Monitor and manage contract compliance, ensuring suppliers adhere to agreed-upon terms. Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of hedging strategies and make adjustments as required to optimize cost savings.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including production, R&D, QA, finance, production, and sales, to align sourcing strategies with business objectives. Provide strategic guidance and support to cross-functional teams on procurement processes, supplier selection, and contract negotiations. Foster effective communication channels to ensure timely and accurate information flow across departments. Engage with R&D teams to support new product development initiatives and identify sourcing opportunities for innovative ingredients and materials.
  • Supply Assurance and Risk Management. Develop and execute robust risk management strategies to mitigate potential disruptions in the supply chain. Identify and assess risks related to suppliers, market dynamics, geopolitical factors, and natural disasters. Implement contingency plans and alternative sourcing strategies to ensure continuity of supply in risk-prone scenarios. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to establish risk mitigation protocols and monitor their effectiveness. Uncover emerging risks and trends in the industry and proactively address potential vulnerabilities.

Education and/or Related Experience Requirements:

  • Demonstrated expertise in layering contract coverage for supply, negotiating contracts, managing supplier performance, and driving cost savings.
  • Track record of progressively increasing responsibility in managing overall sourcing and procurement spend.
  • Proficiency in usingsourcing and procurement software systems, ERP systems, and MS Office Suite.
  • Minimum of 8 years of sourcing experience in a manufacturing environment with prior bakery and food manufacturing or CPG experience is a strong plus.
  • Strong Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, lookups, and proficient in working with large data sets).
  • Familiarity with food safety regulations, quality assurance standards, and industry certifications.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to conduct data-driven decision-making and perform cost analyses.
  • Must work well in a fast-paced environment and have a hands-on and “roll up your sleeves” work ethic.
  • Demonstrated track record of monitoring and analyzing commodity market data and providing insights to drive sourcing decisions and negotiations.
  • Bachelor’s preferred or BA/BS degreein Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent experience preferable.
  • Strong knowledge of sourcing best practices, procurement processes, and supplier relationship management.
  • Experience withNetSuiteis a strong plus.
  • Prefer candidates nearby to Tucker, GA or Hayward, CA site.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Salary:

The annual base salary of $120K-$165K will be dependent upon location and experience. This position is also eligible for an annual bonus.
