General Responsibilities
The Director of International Education provides direction for travel study abroad, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), hosting of international individuals and delegations, international partnership development and agreements, and on-campus and community programming including International Education Week. The director also collaborates with faculty and other college units to support the Global Distinction program, and other institution-wide campus and curriculum internationalization efforts. The director develops high quality travel and virtual programs using best practices including administration, policy development, and academic integrity. The director serves as the risk manager for travel programs and remains current on risks affecting travel in order to ensure programs are conducted safely and in compliance with college policies. The director’s duties require periodic domestic and international travel, as well as the ability to exercise sound judgement as the first line of institutional response to program emergencies. The position requires superb analytical, communication, and organizational skills in order to collaborate effectively with faculty and staff, provide a high level of service to students, and lead the staff of the Office of International Education.

Work Performed
Direct the development, planning, marketing and execution of short-term, faculty-led study abroad and domestic study away programs linked to credit-bearing academic courses.
Develop and implement training for short-term program faculty directors in program design and safety.
Proactively develop partnerships with faculty and academic leadership in order to integrate international experiences into academic programs throughout the college.
Oversee support and advising for the Global Distinction program, to include promotion, enrollment assistance, and maintenance of student records.
Oversee plans for promoting international programs and associated external scholarship opportunities (e.g., Gilman, Boren, CLS) to the HCC student body and the broader Howard County community.
Oversee International Education Week Committee comprised of key staff and faculty members from areas such as the English Institute, World Languages, and International Admissions.
Provide recommendations to the Associate Vice President of Learning Engagement and the Vice President of Teaching and Learning on visit proposals from international delegations, and assist with logistics as needed.
Promote Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) to faculty, develop international partnerships for COIL, collaborate with COIL faculty to provide COIL training, stay current regarding COIL trends and serve as a resource for COIL, and provide administrative structure for COIL program.
Lead Program Review Committees in the evaluation of new travel study abroad program proposals and the review of existing programs.
Manage international faculty travel grant processes including assisting faculty, leading the Grant Review Committee, collaborating with the development office, and post-travel budget reconciliation and follow up.
In collaboration with the Office of Financial Aid and the HCC Educational Foundation, promote and manage all financial aid and internal scholarship funding opportunities for international programs.
Oversee the student travel program application, advising, orientation, and re-entry processes.
Lead assessment efforts for all International Education programs in collaboration with key offices, such as Learning Outcomes Assessment.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in risk management and serve as the first line of on-call institutional response in the event of travel program emergencies.
Develop and manage the budget of the Office of International Education and its constituent programs.
Train, supervise, and support the professional development of the International Education office staff.
Seek grant support as appropriate to support strategic initiatives.
Represent the college in state consortia and through attendance and/or presentations at regional and national conferences.

At least three years of demonstrated experience with the administration of virtual and travel international programs in an academic setting.
Proficiency in one or more foreign languages highly desirable.
Risk and crisis management for travel study abroad programs.
Experience working with diverse student populations and demonstrated knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in increasing access to, and engagement in international programs.
The successful candidate must possess high-level analytical, communication, and organizational skills as well as the ability to build and sustain positive partnerships with a wide range of constituencies.
