Job Description

If this sounds like you, you might be the person we’re searching for to serve as the Director of Government Relations for Groundwork Action, the 501(c)(4) sister organization of . Groundwork Action develops strategic campaigns that beat back the conservative economic agenda and advance progressive economic priorities to improve the lives of working families. We rely on a full toolbox of communications and advocacy strategies – generating earned and paid media, engaging and briefing key decision makers, seizing on key rapid response moments, publishing innovative research and creating content, and organizing strategic pressure at key moments – in order to build an economy that works for us all.


Position Summary


The Director of Government Relations will lead federal advocacy efforts for Groundwork Action and Groundwork Collaborative and serve as the chief liaison to Congress and policymakers for Groundwork Action and Groundwork Collaborative and its multiple campaigns.


As Director of Government Relations, you will…


  • Draft talking points, one-pagers, letters, testimony, and other materials for policymaker and staff
  • Develop deep dives on Congressional committees relevant to key issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work closely with other members of the Groundwork Action and Groundwork Collaborative staff and consultants to weave lobbying work into overall campaign planning and execution.
  • Develop and execute direct advocacy engagement strategies around the macroeconomic model, jobs day, tax policy, and other priorities
  • Manage a calendar of upcoming Congressional events relevant to Groundwork Action’s and Groundwork Collaborative’s work.
  • Provide weekly legislative updates summarizing Hill and Administration activity.
  • Serve as point person for Groundwork Action and Groundwork Collaborative on all direct federal advocacy work.
  • Track legislation and policy developments relevant to Groundwork Action and Groundwork Collaborative priorities.
  • Lead and support lobbying visits, Congressional and staff briefings, hearings, and other engagement.


About You


  • Motivated self-starter;
  • Strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated success planning and executing direct advocacy campaigns.
  • 5+ years of government relations or other relevant experience.
  • Existing Congressional and Administration relationships and policy networks.
  • Excited about helping build a new organization and brand;
  • Ability to track numerous issues and bills across committees
  • Organized and a pro at multitasking and working under tight deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment;.
  • Committed to creating a just, inclusive, and robust economy that delivers opportunity and dignity to all;
  • Excited about thinking creatively and developing new strategies in order to secure advocacy wins.


The starting salary for this position is $130,000 with flexibility to offer a higher salary for highly-qualified candidates. We offer a generous benefits package, including three weeks of vacation, two weeks of personal leave, two week-long office closures, and additional time off for floating and federal holidays, zero-premium health insurance, a generous HRA, a retirement match of up to 6%, a minimum of 12 weeks parental leave, health club and cell-phone reimbursements, among other benefits.


We are a hybrid workplace, with two days a week in the office, and three days remote, as well as the occasional need to work in person for events and special projects.
