Job Description
Overview
The position is responsible for planning and executing all events and programs for the Age Strong Commission. This includes expanding and implementing existing and new program areas by seeking new opportunities to engage and increase the number of older adults benefiting from the Commission's social and recreational programs. The Director will work closely with senior management to identify and develop strategic opportunities that help sustain and increase the impact of Age Strong’s programming in meeting the social, physical, emotional, and intellectual needs of Boston’s older adults.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage an event and programmatic database. Administer all aspects of an ongoing programmatic calendar including planning, organizing, recruiting and controlling program activities.
  • Develop and manage effective relationships with stakeholders particularly in the areas of event planning and program management.
  • Research best practice, which may include: analyzing information; identifying issues and discrepancies; projecting outcomes; formulating recommendations; identifying priorities
  • Compile data and prepare reports.
  • Flexible schedule as some nights and weekends are required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Identify and coordinate staff training opportu nities
  • Supervise staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Develop a network of vendors and manage vendor contracts and related RFPs including caterers, musicians, and other service providers.
  • Respond to complex requests or concerns from stakeholders and provide information and guidance of programs and/or service; providing technical assistance and trainings in program development.
  • Represent the Age Strong Commission at meetings with stakeholders, partners, and constituents.
  • Manage and oversee the preparation and maintenance of required records and reports; ensures compliance with Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations, rules, and/or standards.
  • Develop creative concepts and introduce best practices for implementing senior programming across the city. Develop planning standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee all aspects of event planning and implementation, including, contracts, timelines, vendors, staffing, communications, pre and post event processes, and flow of operations during event.
  • Promote a collaborative team environment.
  • Work with the leadership team to identify gaps and guide service delivery strategies to support the need
  • Establish a system for implementing program goals, objectives, and evaluation.
  • Establish and manage standards and timelines to meet programmatic expectations and reporting guidelines
  • Serve as liaison between the Commission, City departments, and community organizations.
  • Plan, organize, execute, and evaluate all Commission events and programs. Develop and implement strategic goals, objectives, activities.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
  • Ability to work independently; to show flexibility and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Familiarity with the aging field highly preferred.
  • Ability to deliver one-on-one and team feedback.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
  • Experience with assessing, targeting, and seeking potential partners with similar agenda or reciprocal offerings preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Experience and comfort working with diverse communities, delivering services to a multiracial, multigenerational, multicultural, and multilingual population.
  • Strong project management skills with experience in event and activities planning preferred.
  • Bilingual candidate preferred.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Experience with typical office software systems (Google and Microsoft Office Suites, or equivalent) required.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and think strategically.

  • Experience with building and maintaining relationships across sectors including with government agencies, social service agencies, community organizations, and older adults highly preferred.
  • Minimum four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the support of human service programs, including event and activities planning, program management, customer service, of which one year should have been in a team leadership, mentoring, or supervisory capacity.
  • Experience and comfortability working with diverse communities, delivering services to a multiracial, multigenerational, multicultural, and multilingual population.
  • Associate’s degree may count for up to one (1) year of required experience, bachelor’s degree may count for up to two (2) years of required experience, and master’s degree may count for up to three (3) years of required experience.
  • Travel throughout Boston required in support of the position’s responsibilities.
  • Ability to comply with documented policies and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. Experience drafting reports and briefings preferred.
