Job Summary

The Director of Engineering & Quality successfully leads people, projects, and processes to get results. You lead with respect and effective communication, solve technical and business problems individually and collaboratively, and work with leadership on our strategic direction. The core of this position requires a motivated and motivating team builder and organization developer. The job centers around developing new ideas, systems, and technology, and analyzing and improving on existing procedures, processes, methods, and Quality. A high level of expertise is required with the ability to spot and correct errors.


Responsibilities


The primary duties and responsibilities of the Director of Engineering and Quality consist of but are not limited to:

  • Provides leadership and supervision to the UMC Engineering team and Quality team; fosters a healthy team culture and invests in growth and development
  • Responsible for ensuring product quality conformance, best practices, and quality standards
  • Able to respond to and resolve internal and external quality issues with customers, suppliers, and internal stake holders
  • Forecast operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests
  • Maintain a working knowledge of new technologies that may improve operations and develop recommendations
  • Develop annual department expense budget that utilizes all resources and meets the product and technology development requirements of the company
  • Develop annual capital budget to identify capital requirements to establish and maintain the department functions. Identify and budget for necessary capital to produce developed products
  • Interact and collaborate cross-functionally
  • Advise management of new developments that may affect profit, schedule, costs, customer relations, and/or inter-departmental relations
  • Other tasks as assigned
  • Overall responsibility for the Quality Management System, sets direction and oversees execution of quality assurance and regulatory compliance programs.
  • Reviews and evaluates the best structure of the departments to achieve company goals and objectives, adjusting as appropriate with the growth and change in the organization
  • Develop employees through training, coaching and effective feedback, ensuring they understand and follow policies and procedures
  • Provide direction and support for the manufacturing process to ensure customer satisfaction and continuous process improvement
  • Resolve problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, or concepts
  • Lead transfer to production of sustaining projects and dealing with special requests from OEM customers
  • Prepare operating budgets and strategic plans for the Engineering and Quality Departments that meet the company’s overall goals
  • Drive New Product Launch (NPL) process on time and on budget
  • Analyze technology trends, human resource needs and market demand to plan projects
  • Exhibit a working knowledge of health and safety, responsible for safety awareness, while upholding and improving the culture of safety within the organization. Identify opportunities for improvement and act if appropriate before a problem occurs. Report potential hazards, unsafe working conditions, unsafe equipment, unsafe acts, and injuries immediately
  • Provide direction and leadership to the engineering and quality teams, managing the Engineering Manager and Quality Manager to coordinate work to support strategic plans
  • The Director role is dynamic and changing. Because goals and desired results can quickly change, the ability to understand, quickly react and motivate others to adapt to the changing organization environment is a critical key to success


Requirements


Education and Experience

  • Experience working in an AS9100 and/or ISO13485 environment
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical or electrical engineering focus preferred), MBA preferred
  • 10+ years' experience in managing engineers and/or technical resources and projects
  • Broad understanding of precision machining/manufacturing processes and products
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead people and projects and to get results through others
  • Experience in materials, process, and equipment optimization

Physical Requirements?

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Sit for a period of time
  • Lifting up to 15 lbs.
  • Job may require periodic travel to customers, suppliers, and industry events
  • Dexterity - with computers, ability to type, use of mouse, at a computer
