Job Details


The Director of Emergency Nursing is accountable for the management of his/her unit on a twenty-four-hour basis. This includes maintaining patient safety within the legal boundaries of standards; selecting, evaluation and maintaining unit staff to meet the standards of care within the organization; managing manpower and non-wage budget within set budget.


Responsibilities/Essential Functions


Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards.


Prepares baseline budget annually, develops short- and long-range budgetary goals.


Represents the hospital in Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals Emergency Services Community.


Communicates and cooperates with individuals in the organization in order to integrate patient care services.


Actively participates in cross-organizational activities to improve performance on his/her unit (i.e. committee representation).


Allocates adequate resources for assessing and improving the department's clinical processes.


Assesses the need for adequate space and resources to meet patient care needs and provide any necessary recommendations through the appropriate channels.


Integrates the patient care services for his/her units into Medical Center's overall plan for the delivery of care.


Participates in developing, reviewing, revising policies and procedures for his/her units.


Responsible for overseeing the implementation of approved policies and procedures.


Determines/recommends a sufficient number of qualified personnel to meet patient care needs that is consistent with the assessed needs of the unit.


Continuously assesses and improves the performance of care and services provided in his/her areas of responsibility.


Ensures that there is a mechanism for providing orientation, in-service training, and continuing education for his/her staff.


Collaborates with appropriate organization staff to plan for the provision of patient care services. This plan reflects identified patient needs as consistent with the mission of the Medical Center.


Develops an annual operating budget and capital expenditure plan, including a strategy to monitor implementation of the plan.


Ensures that the scope of patient care services for his/her areas of responsibility are defined in writing.


Develops, incorporates and maintains the standards of clinical practice as defined by the Nursing Division.


Coordinates the unit-based Performance Improvement Program and assists staff in identifying and monitoring the quality indicators that are most pertinent to the unit's patient care goals.


Actively participates in all collaborative group practices.


Contributes to the design and implementation of CareMaps TM.


Acts as one of the primary resources to Care Managers in the role development and/or problem solving.


Provides for education on CareMapping and Care Management system.


Promotes methods to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration in the effective management of patient care.


Collaborates with other departments in relation to the services needed for the patient care unit.


Collaborates with Nurse Educator, provides orientation, in-service education, and continuing education for staff.


Evaluates professional growth of each staff member annually in writing. Provides guidance in identifying developmental needs and strategies that foster effective problem solving, collaboration, consultation, sound clinical judgment and leadership.


Develops short - term strategies and long-term plans to provide optimal staffing patterns for patient care.


Identifies current needs for use of equipment and projects future capital budget items.


Ensures Medical Center's mission statement by participating in the ongoing development and implementation of the philosophy and goals of the Nursing Division.


Participates on committees, task forces, interdisciplinary forums that are concerned with patient care.


Submits quarterly written variance report to Vice President of Patient Care Services.


Reports quarterly in writing to Performance Improvement Council.


Submits annual operating and capital expenditure budgets.


Is accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital-related, medical-staff related, and patient-related data and information.


Is accountable for abiding by all relevant Medical Center policies and procedures.


Is accountable for developing, implementing, and maintaining clinical competencies for staff.


Is accountable to inform AVP, Operations, Vice President, Patient Care Services, Medical Directors, Clinical Services, Directors, of any significant event that affects the organization.


Qualifications


Minimum Education


Graduate of accredited school of nursing.


Master's degree required


Minimum Experience


Two years leadership experience.


Five years clinical experience.


Minimum Skills/abilities


Able to lift, transfer, and move patients.


Has the knowledge and skills appropriate to care for unit patient population.


Ability to analyze complex issues and solve them creatively.


Ability to coordinate multiple casualty incident response.


Ability to triage.


Ability to safely use all emergency patient care equipment, i.e., defibrillators, pacers, telemetry, radiant warmers.


Ability to operate and communicate effectively via Emergency Response Radio System.


Certification/Licensure


Current licensure as a registered nurse in Massachusetts.
