Job Description
Are you an Educator who wants to play a key role in this newly created position for Troy Alternative School in Columbia City? Are you an Educator who wants to make a difference in the lives of students for whom an alternative school is clearly not the best choice for their success in learning? If you can answer "yes" to these questions, you should consider this opportunity.


Troy School is an accredited, independent, non-profit school for grades 6-12 and has developed a customized educational design that provides students with quality academic training plus support in counseling, life-skills development, and parent development. The school provides a 1:7 staff to student ratio.


As Director of Education you will report to the Executive Director. You will have a staff of 23 reporting to you, most who work part-time. You will be responsible for a successful teaching and learning environment for students and staff.


As Director Of Education You Will


  • Serve as the key communications leader among staff, students, families.
  • Supervise student enrollment and establishes criteria, policies and procedures for selection and placement.
  • Be responsible for attracting, interviewing, hiring, retaining, developing and evaluating (as required by the Indiana Dept. of Education) properly qualified faculty and staff, as well as terminating staff when needed.
  • Manage the school’s teaching, transportation, and operations staff.
  • Ensures legal compliance with all federal, state and local regulations in conjunction with the executive director.
  • Attends board of directors’ meetings when requested
  • Provide leadership in shaping the school’s educational programs while advancing the mission of the TROY School.
  • Plan and carry out staff meetings, coordinate any staff training/professional development, ensure there is adequate staff on a day-to-day basis, and may fill-in as necessary in the classroom or where staff is needed.
  • Ensure that school policies are followed and fosters a high-quality learning environment.
  • Develop and enforces discipline in support of the school’s mission, adhering to all State guidelines and laws.
  • Oversees compliance with all Indiana Dept. of Education requirements for the Choice Scholarship Program and Indiana State Laws with the Executive Director.
  • Assist the Executive Director in developing a long-term, multi-year strategic plan by proposing relevant priorities and implementing key action plans, goals and desired outcomes.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration among staff, parents and students by creating a trusting, collaborative, open and positive atmosphere.
  • Adheres to accreditation standards at all times and procures accreditation renewal terms.
  • Apply a clear vision for TROY School.
  • Carry out, review, and maintain, compliance with established school policies and the requirements of the Indiana Dept. of Education in conjunction with the director of education.


As Director Of Education Your Background Should Include


  • Strong planning skills.
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to motivate and inspire staff, students, families, and other school stakeholders.
  • 10 years of professional experience, preferably within the K-12 education sector is preferred.
  • Previous experience within a private/public/charter/freeway school is highly desirable.
  • A detail-oriented, quality and precision-focused, innovative, outcome-results focused leader.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws applying to private schools and freeway schools.
  • A dedication to establishing and maintaining positive, respectful relationships with students, staff and families.
  • Strong strategic thinking with an ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities effectively.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred in Education or School Administration.
  • Organizational leadership experience with a proven record of success.
