POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Director of Development

The W.L. Gilbert Trust

Location: Winsted, CT

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The W.L. Gilbert Trust’s Director of Development is responsible for developing a culture of philanthropy and participatory support among constituencies, as well as identifying and cultivating sources of transformative revenue. The position requires interaction and collaboration with the CEO, alumni, faculty, staff, administration, students and the Board of Trustees. The Director of Development must be a strategic thinker who can design a multi-year plan to invigorate annual giving, expand planned giving, and achieve robust and clear major gift goals; recognize both the qualitative need to build and maintain relationships and the quantitative need to set monetary targets, effectively balancing both demands; rely effectively on salient data for planning and ongoing measurement of operation’s outcomes; be able to communicate The W.L. Gilbert Trust’s mission, its value, and its potential to an array of audiences; ensure within the office a unified message and optimized processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Over 8-10 years’ experience in fundraising and development for non-profit organizations; familiarity with independent school and/or town academy development operations; and capital campaign experience preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence in human relations
  • Excellent communication, technology, and interpersonal skills
  • Other qualifications determined by the CEO and Board of Trustees
  • Applicants must pass a background check
  • Positive attitude, integrity, and a sense of humor essential
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university preferred

·Skills in collecting, assembling, and analyzing data, monitoring progress and preparing reports

·Ability to compose correspondence and reports from brief instruction

·Display a positive attitude, promote harmony, and model quality principles

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attends board, committee, and other meetings
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the CEO
  • Develop and coordinate planned giving programs
  • Oversight of all fundraising and related activities including public relations
  • Manage the Development Department and develop a strategic plan to meet development objectives consistent with the missions of The W.L. Gilbert Trust
  • Research public and private grant resources to identify sources of restricted and unrestricted funding
  • Establish, maintain, and improve systems and procedures with regard to development and alumni relations
  • Write and/or coordinate grant proposals to corporate, foundation, and government funders
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential donors through various methods
  • Research and recommend strategies for the expansion of successful development efforts
  • Develop and direct scholarship, donor, and volunteer recognition programs
  • Oversee the maintenance of a comprehensive database of potential donors and manage a record of donors
  • Prepare an annual development budget
  • Develop publications to promote institutional advancement
  • Develop and grow individual donor base, manage the annual giving campaign and cultivate major gifts
