Responsibilities


This position will be primarily responsible for the successful stewardship of the following


The Director of Development will lead Barrie School’s fundraising and outreach efforts in support of its mission. This full-time position will report to the Head of School and will be a member of the Senior Administrative team. The Director will work collaboratively across the organization, partnering closely with the Head of School, and the school’s Directors of Admission and Communications and Director of Community Engagement.


  • Develop and execute a stewardship program for all constituents to ensure cultivation and communication tracking to continually engage with Barrie School community members.
  • Work collaboratively with the Advancement Team that consists of the Director of Communications, the Director of Community Engagement, and Director of Admission to coordinate internal and external marketing and communications efforts.
  • Run and manage all aspects of the Annual Fund (organizational strategy, constituent research, direct mail and email communication, solicitations, tracking, gift entry, and acknowledgments).
  • Provide direct leadership of all Development special events. Collaborate with Faculty and Staff on related events, including the Parent Teacher Organization, alumni, admissions, and large, all-school events.
  • Partner with a Barrie School Trustee to serve as the Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees’ Advancement Committee (which sets the strategic direction of the school’s institutional advancement efforts and reports monthly progress to the Board of Trustees).
  • Oversee the Development budget, maintain Barrie School’s development database (Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge), send correspondence confirming gifts to all donors, reconcile contributions with the Business Office, and collaborate with the Director of Communications on the Annual Report.
  • Take the primary leadership role on the Advancement Committee to create a comprehensive development plan, strategy, and calendar that includes a plan for a Major Gifts Program. Identify and research new prospects, and work closely with the Head of School to qualify new prospects and manage key donor cultivation. Offer guidance and preparation for all cultivation and solicitation visits.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for Alumni Relations. Create and implement a variety of ways to engage with Barrie Alumni, and maintain the alumni database.
  • Co-Chair the Annual Benefit Committee and recruit and manage parent and staff volunteers to organize the school’s annual community fundraising event.
  • Manage and enhance policies, procedures, and infrastructure related to effectively operating Advancement efforts across the community.


The Director of Development will be an experienced professional who:


  • Has a proven fundraising track record of successful leadership in major gifts, capital campaigns, and annual fund. Stands ready and eager to facilitate donor relationships with senior school leaders and faculty, working to cultivate Head of School relationships with key donors. An ideal candidate would also have experience working with parent volunteers in a multitude of ways to ensure a vibrant parent volunteer community.

  • Is a skilled, thoughtful writer who can create persuasive and engaging communications to further the school’s advancement goals.

  • Enjoys teamwork and collaboration by being energetic and hard-working, warm, optimistic, and relentlessly committed to stewarding the future of the school.
  • Has 5 to 7 years of experience, preferably in an independent school with knowledge of advancement best practices.
  • Is comfortable with utilizing development databases to record, track, and analyze information.


Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and will include a robust vacation package and tuition remission for school-age children at Barrie School. The position is designed to begin in the summer of 2023 with a start date to be negotiated based on the needs of the school and the candidate.
