Mass General Brigham (MGB) is a world- wide recognized Health system providing exceptional patient care within Massachusetts, New England and the rest of the globe. Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital are also world leaders in research aimed at improving the health status of the citizens of the world. The Mass General Brigham Sports Medicine initiative launched in 2020 with the goal of creating a regional, national, and international hub for Sports Medicine and related Specialties. The Mass General Brigham Center for Sports Performance Research (CSPaR) program is expanding upon the MGB Sports Medicine initiative and is aimed at providing world-class training for the everyday athlete. The CSPaR service is a highly specialized team of experts aimed at providing coordinated and comprehensive training and care for the professional, masters, collegiate, high school, amateur, and recreational athlete.
The Director of Athlete Development will serve as the MGB Ambassador of Athlete Development to sports organizations (professional and amateur), NGOs, and sporting institutions throughout the world. In the role of Ambassador, the Director of Athlete Development will be responsible for the development and implementation of opportunities for collaboration and partnership with sporting entities. As a corollary, the Director of Athlete Development will also be responsible for recruiting for athletes at all levels (high school to professional) to train at CSPaR.
The CSPaR Director of Athlete Development will also serve as a key collaborator for the training and care of the athlete/client and provide a core set of expertise, working collaboratively with other team members on a multi-disciplinary approach and programmatic training. The Director of Athlete Development will be responsible for the overall athletic development of the athlete through testing and assessment, analysis, and programmatic development of training implementation for athletes/clients within CSPaR. The CSPaR Director of Athlete Development position requires strong interpersonal and leadership skills and is expected to engage on research and collaboration projects, including but not limited to, participating and presenting at professional conferences, meetings, round table discussions, and possible educational opportunities. The CSPaR Director of Athlete Development should be comfortable with coaching all levels of athletes and all sporting activities, including but not limited to, tactical athletes (e.g., military, police, fire, EMS).
Responsibilities:
Business development:
- Collaborates with CSPaR management to nurture external client relationships and forge collaborative growth strategies
- Professional and amateur sports organizations, NGOs and sporting institutions to increase visibility for CSPaR through event hosting opportunities, collaborations, sponsorships/marketing and programs
- Support and collaborate with Program Director, CSPaR to design, develop and launch next-generation products and services (e.g., provide market insights, enable market-testing and pilot programs with existing customers).
- Sources, implements and manages strategic partnerships with external parties that help CSPaR achieve its strategic goals, e.g.:
- Professional and collegiate athletes to increase visibility for CSPaR through collaborations and sponsorships/marketing
- Develops robust short term and long term strategically aligned pipeline, from early lead to deal closure, driving revenue in multiyear plan
Athlete Development:
- Collects and document data regarding training and fitness.
- Oversees strength, conditioning, and fitness plans for both team and individual training.
- Serves as a sports performance consultant, resource, and lecturer for health care providers, students, and the public.
- Provides program development for 1-on-1, small groups, and large groups (team) that is science/research-based.
- Conducts athlete/client metabolic assessments.
- Performs other duties as requested by management staff such as client check-in at off-site clinics and calling clients to address concerns and questions.
- Provides 1-on-1 coaching, small group coaching, and large group (team) coaching.
- Conducts athlete/client movement assessments.
- Participates in client satisfaction and problem solving with sports performance and customer service issues.
- Instructs and coaches on proper exercise technique and equipment usage.
- Maintains Sports Science database and Athlete Management System.
- Interprets, evaluates, and utilizes pertinent current research related to sports and tactical performance, and presents such to CSPaR, MGB team conferences or MD/PhD correspondence.
- Maintains excellent rapport and effective working relationships with the CSPaR Team and MGB Sports Medicine department including clinicians, managers, administration, and outside consultants.
- Manages and maintains technology-based equipment used in athlete performance. Maintains an excellent rapport and effective working relationship with CSPaR equipment suppliers/vendors.
Management Responsibilities:
- Collects, interprets, and reports sports science data.
- Performs other duties, including administrative duties, as requested by management staff.
- Collects and reports productivity, training outcomes, and other data that is necessary for quality improvement and reports to the Program Director of CSPaR.
- Oversees the Sports Performance program and ensures that performance staff is aligned with CSPaR mission.
Educational Responsibilities:
- Develops and expands professional proficiency in selected or assigned areas of specialty (example: recovery, sports science, tactical, eSports, speed, agility, power).
- Develops and presents group education classes, in specialized areas to hospital staff, professional organizations, the community at large, media and/or contract institutions.
- Engage on research and collaboration projects, including but not limited to, participating and presenting and professional conferences, meetings, round table discussions, and possible educational opportunities.
Participates in mandatory hospital in-services (OSHA, safety, respiratory, fire, confidentiality).
Qualifications:
- CPR Certification a plus
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) is preferred.
- 10 years of relevant experience in collegiate, professional, and/or military setting.
- Certification by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F) is preferred.
- Certification by USA Track & Field is preferred.
- Bachelor’s required, Master’s degree is strongly preferred
Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time (greater than 4 hours).
- Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties, including Microsoft Office Suite, database management and programming. Experience with Smartabase is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and delegate responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of human anatomy and exercise physiology as it relates to sports specific training and conditioning.
- Capable of juggling multiple tasks and competing priorities and work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
- Has the ability to quickly learn other information systems used within the institution (i.e. Electronic Medical Record system and Athlete Management System)
- Must have basic computer skills to be able to use various computer programs/systems within the CSPaR
- Must be able to read, write and speak English
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Knowledge of sports biomechanics.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to structure and lead discussions.
- Ability to lift over 50 pounds.
Working Conditions:
- The work may require the lifting of heavy objects, as well as exposure to potentially infective material
- May require domestic and international travel
- Collaborative work environment with activity and needs across several locations in the greater Foxborough, MA area
- Working in an active training area with high velocity objects, heavy weights, and athletes running can be expected. Hazards present from exposure to liquid nitrogen vapors, magnesium sulfate (epsom salt), or disinfecting agents are minimized when safety precautions are strictly adhered to
