JOB DESCRIPTION


JOB TITLE: Director of Information Technology

DEPARTMENT: Information Technology

FLSA STATUS: Exempt – Administrative


JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Information Technology is responsible for planning and managing all aspects of the information technology infrastructure, systems, and services at the Museum. In partnership with other organizational leaders, the Director works to advance the Museum’s mission, goals, and strategy through technology.


JOB PURPOSE:

The Director is responsible for the acquisition, implementation, development, maintenance, and support of appropriate technologies for all museum operations. The Director is responsible for ensuring the Museum’s computer network is secure and operating optimally. The Director of Information Technology fosters the effective use of technology to support the Museum’s mission. The Director works closely with the management team and key stakeholders to envision transformative technology for the Museum and develop strategies to introduce innovative solutions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Director collaborates with departments to assess and understand their technological needs.

Maintain high availability of network resources

Provide effective technical support services and project assistance

Responsible for network security, troubleshooting, and disaster recovery

System administrator for network and cloud-based applications

Lead IT projects, ensuring deliverables are met within scope, timeline, and budget

Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, identify project risks, and develop mitigation strategies

Manage relationships with external vendors and service providers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services and products

Develop annual capital and operating budgets for the department; manage the budgets by approving and monitoring departmental spending

Recommend policies and standard operating procedures for approval by the senior leadership team

Enforce policies for the appropriate use of computers, email, and the Internet in conjunction with institutional policies and procedures

Implement and maintain effective cybersecurity measures, including threat detection, prevention, and response

Evaluate technology proposals and potential technology projects

Enhance security through ongoing staff training

Maintain up-to-date systems with the application and testing of upgrades, patches, etc

Supervise staff and manage complex programs and projects

Envision, plan, and implement innovative technology solutions


OTHER DUTIES:

Evening and weekend work is sometimes required and may be on an emergency basis

Participate in institutional committees and task force work as needed

Conduct ongoing research to identify new developments in various areas of technology, with a primary focus on innovative use of technology in museums

Promote the use of technology to support project and committee work, improve staff communication, and build sustainable information resources

Other duties as assigned


REPORTS TO: Vice President of Finance


WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Director of Information Technology works collaboratively with the management team and museum stakeholders to establish a vision for Museum technology and to identify opportunities and set priorities for the use of information technology in carrying out the goals and objectives of the Museum.


DIRECT REPORTS: Technical Support Specialist


QUALIFICATIONS:

Advanced degree in computer sciences, information systems management, or related field, or bachelor’s degree in technology and equivalent experience

Five to ten years experience in the management of information systems; three to five years of experience in a supervisory position

Experience managing the following is required: Windows Server environment, VMWare, Office 365, network, routers, and firewall

Certifications in VMWare, Microsoft 365 Administrator, and Project Management Professional (PMP) a plus

Ability to plan and manage budgets

Ability to solve technical, administrative, and personnel problems creatively

Successful track record of working on teams and leading complex projects

Broad and in-depth understanding of the latest information technologies

Strong technical knowledge in computing environments

Strong motivational, negotiation, and customer service skills

Familiarity with nonprofit or museum environments is a plus

Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position equipment weighing up to 50 pounds from floor to shoulder height

Superior verbal and written communication skills

Commitment to the mission, values, and programs of the Chicago History Museum
