Job Description
ABOUT
St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School (SJBDHS) serves the community as a coeducational, college preparatory Catholic High School located in West Islip, New York. Guided by Catholic tradition, SJBHS educates young people in grades 9th through 12th from diverse abilities and backgrounds in an environment of mutual respect and compassion.
POSITION
SJBDHS is seeking a full-time Principal for the 2024/2025 school year. The Principal will serve as the educational leader of the school directly reporting to the Superintendent of Education.
SCOPE OF POSITION
The mission of Catholic education is the holistic spiritual, intellectual, and emotional formation in intimacy with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and in zealous dedication to the mission of the Catholic Church.
The Catholic school principal is a Catholic Evangelizer and thereby a champion of the school's Catholic identity and vibrant Catholic formation. He or she is faithful to the Splendor of Truth of Catholic teaching in every way and articulates these truths in his or her communications inspirationally, compellingly, and consistently. Through his or her commitment to evangelization and catechesis, the Catholic school principal seeks to form students to be public square Catholics who bring the truths of Catholic moral teaching into every sector of society.
The Catholic school principal is Eucharistic Revivalist, helping to guide the Eucharistic evangelization of students, administration, faculty, staff, families, and alumni so that they are faithful to the Sunday Mass and to a Eucharistic philosophy of life.
The Catholic school principal is radically faithful to the Gospel of human life, understanding, practicing, upholding, and proclaiming Catholic teaching on marriage and family and Catholic anthropology.
The Principal is committed to academic and educational practice, excellence, and the highest standards of servant leadership in regard to enrollment and retention of students, governance, finance, marketing, development, alumni evangelization, and use of social media.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Philosophy:
  • A practicing Catholic who understands and is dedicated to the ministry of Catholic education.
  • Actively fosters the Catholic identity of the school by promoting Catholic values and nurturing the faith formation and spirituality of faculty, staff, and students.
Organizational Leadership:
  • Promotes high ethical and professional standards in all interactions with the stakeholders in the school.
  • Assures maintenance of complete, accurate, and up-to-date personnel and pupil records according to Diocesan guidelines.
  • Establishes an organizational structure through which working relationships, lines of accountability and responsibility, and communication channels are clearly defined.
  • Establishes a clear, strong, and consistent policy for dealing with issues involving student discipline and interactions among teachers, administration, and the parent body.
  • Nurture both students and faculty to achieve their greatest potential academically, instructionally and spiritually.
  • Implements and encourages collaborative planning and leadership at all levels of the school organization.
Faculty, Staff, and Instructional Program:
  • Encourages effective teaching based on current educational research and improved student learning results.
  • Possesses a broad understanding of curriculum, instruction, and student assessment procedures.
  • Guides the development and implementation of the school curriculum.
  • Approves the school calendar and scheduling of special events.
  • Foster a professional community of teachers and other professional staff to promote each student's academic success and well-being.
  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of the role of technology in education.
  • Recruit, lead and evaluate faculty and staff to ensure a robust and interactive learning environment. Inspires excellence in teaching and learning through the pursuit of quality professional development for faculty and staff.
Students:
  • Maintains a visible leadership presence during the school day and at school-related liturgies, events, and activities.
  • Monitors student progress in the academic program as well as in co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Oversees the recruitment and admission process for new students.
  • Administers disciplinary and dismissal actions.
Parents:
  • Participates frequently in school-sponsored parent activities.
  • Establishes accessible and open communication with parents (individual meetings, emails, parent programs, conferences).
  • Engage families and the community in meaningful, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial ways to promote each student's academic success and well-being.
Finance and Facilities:
  • Ensures the school is safe, clean, well-maintained, and attractive.
  • Responsible to ensure that the school is adequately funded for school operations, including salaries and benefits, student tuition assistance, ongoing and deferred maintenance, and staff professional development.
  • Complies with all procedures set forth for Catholic high schools in the Department of Education's Administrative Handbook.
  • Participates in the activities of the Development Office.
Public Relations and External Constituencies:
  • Fosters cooperation and communication with Catholic schools, parishes, and the community.
  • Promotes social justice and outreach programs to Catholic and other non-profit agencies whose mission is consistent with Catholic moral teaching.
  • Actively promotes the image and reputation of the school.

He or she will be a collaborative leader with an accessible and approachable style that demonstrates a willingness to listen to new ideas while offering creative solutions and strong leadership challenges. The successful candidate will be a coalition builder who creates an inclusive environment that is conducive to sincere and open communication.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
A master's degree or higher in Education or Education Administration is required.
NYS School Leadership Certification is required.
High School experience is required. Experience in a Catholic school environment is desired.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills.
COMPENSATION
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and a comprehensive benefits package will be provided. A compensation range of $115,000 to $150,000 will be considered.
