Summary

The University of Michigan Library in Ann Arbor is one of the world?s largest academic research libraries. The library seeks a talented and service-oriented individual to serve as a Digital Publishing Coordinator in the Publishing Services unit within Michigan Publishing. The Digital Publishing Coordinator is primarily responsible for the project management, performance, and completion of digital publishing projects, including overseeing the publication of journal issues, books, and digital projects. They will be responsible for preparing and producing scholarly content for publication online and in print. The Coordinator will need to be a good team player with demonstrated time- and project-management skills and be able to solve many common problems independently, and is committed to improving efficiency and responsiveness both within and outside the department. This position reports to the Director of Publishing Services.

Responsibilities*

  • Review manuscripts for completeness and potential issues prior to production.
  • Create and maintain internal project documentation and records.
  • Work with a wide variety of vendors and publishing partners to manage complex and varied publication workflows and schedules to ensure timely completion of multiple projects.
  • Work with members of the Publishing Technology team to ingest, release, and troubleshoot digital publications.
  • Prepare and validate materials for online publication in digital formats such as EPUB, XML, and PDF, in addition to print formats.
  • Contribute to library-wide initiatives as a member of relevant task forces and committees.
  • Create and maintain project metadata in existing systems.
  • Plan and participate in educational workshops and other outreach activities, including occasional conference presentations.
  • Coordinate tasks with other team members, delegating simpler tasks to student employees when appropriate.
  • Proofread for obvious structural, grammatical, or stylistic errors.

Required Qualifications*

  • Strong computer literacy skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Experience managing projects, prioritizing among multiple projects, and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical, oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate in a professionally diverse environment.
  • Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
  • Ability to organize workflow; both write and follow documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and make timely decisions.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign.
  • Experience working with XML, HTML, or another markup language.
  • Previous experience with digital publishing production or editorial processes.

Work Schedule

This position will be full-time, 40 hours/week; typically Monday - Friday day-time shifts. The Publishing Services team typically works a hybrid schedule with some days in office and some days of remote work.
