Job Description

General Summary of Position
Under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Services Supervisor and the Patient Services Manager, the Dietary Aide perform a variety of duties from serving food items to patients, associates, and guest, to dish room/sanitation duties. Dietary Aides are cross-trained to work every position on the tray line: i.e., starter, expo, checker, Hospitality Aide. Dietary Aide serves food to customers in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner, as well as clean up after serving hours. The Dietary Aide under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Services Supervisor maintains the sanitation standards in compliance as indicated in the cleaning schedule/assignment in the serving area as well as all of the equipment and dining room tables. Some light food preparation such as cold salads, grill items, cold sandwiches, cutting pies and cakes, preparing desserts, etc., is required of this position.


Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred

Experience

  • Some food experience preferred

  • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs any major cleaning duties as assigned by the supervisor. Responsible for handling cash if cashiering for that day; responsible for following proper cashier and cash handling procedures.
  • Returns all unused items to the refrigerators, freezers, or store-room, properly wrapped, dated, and labeled and place in the appropriate place after each meal. Follow break schedules as indicated.
  • Cleans all equipment per cafeteria cleaning schedule.
  • Maintains serving area in a clean, neat, and orderly manner. Knows and understands all the departmental policies and procedures (MSDS, safety, infection control, sanitation standards, portion control, diets, NPO's, supplements, etc).
  • Required to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts. Assist customers with any requests and/or complaints.
  • Sweep and mop floors after each meal, clean walk-ins and storage area as well.
  • Assists with the preparation of salads, desserts, and nourishments.
  • Assists in maintaining the restrooms in a clean and sanitary manner. Directly responsible to respond to customer needs/requests in the department as well as outside the department, in a helpful manner at all times, even in crisis situations.
