Job Description
Summary:
Provides diabetes self-management education and training (DSME/T), using assessment, goal setting, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Develops professional competency of clinical staff.
  • Consist of mostly educating newly diagnosed diabetics, individuals that are having challenges around blood sugar control/diabetes management, insulin pumps, and DKA. Great opportunity to work alongside nurses and providers throughout the hospital (Primarily at Memorial Central, with some patient interactions at Memorial North or Grandview Hospitals)
  • The position is Monday through Friday, no weekends.
  • The position is fairly autonomous, with mutually agreed upon hours determined between the department manager and diabetic education RN.
  • Preferred: CDCES certification

Work Schedule: Full Time Days

Responsibilities:
  • Educates patients on the necessary lifestyle changes involved in a diabetes diagnosis, including nutrition, medication, physical activity and glucose testing.
  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
  • Trains other team members and participates in annual provider training on insulin pumps and intensive insulin management.
  • Acts as advanced level diabetes educator within 3 years of hire, as recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) guidelines.
  • Constructs age-specific education. Incorporates data from care team into the plan of care. Follows the AADE 7 self-care behaviors in education.

Requirements:
  • Minimum Experience: 1 year as a Registered Dietitian. Experience in managing patients with diabetes. Preferred: 2 years as a diabetes educator and completion of certification.
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist
  • BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire. All life support certification cards must be issued by either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer. (American Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer is only good upon hire and all renewals will need to be through an American Heart Association sanctioned course.)
  • Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Dietetics. Preferred: Master's degree.
  • Required Licensure/Certification: Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration required within 3 months of hire. CDCES (Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist) as defined by the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE) within 3 years of hire. Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider.
  • Registered Dietitian

The pay range for this position is: $33.82 - $50.73 / hour. Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
