Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Simons Foundation is growing our computational science organization called the Flatiron Institute. The Scientific Computing Core (SCC) is part of the Flatiron Institute and develops and deploys the computing infrastructure — including new computational and statistical methods and storage and data-handling systems — necessary for carrying out the center’s research. It also acts as a creator and disseminator of software tools for use by various scientific communities, as well as assisting with development of open source software from communities. As a member of SCC, the DevOps Engineer will provide detailed technical maintenance/support across the Flatiron Institute.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned or required.
  • Advise researchers in best practices around open source software distribution, testing, and packaging using Github, pip, conda, docker, and other technologies.
  • Help deploy web-based research services using on-prem Kubernetes and Virtual Machines, and cloud-based services like Amazon web services.
  • Implement automated build and test CI (continuous integration) workflows on Github, Jenkins, and other platforms for these packages as specified by researchers and developers.
  • Work with others in SCC to maintain infrastructure and networking for running docker, Kubernetes, and Virtual Machines, setting up and expanding clusters as needed.
  • Help build and deploy automated documentation tools and other web content using Github pages, Nginx, and other hosting tools.
  • Provide support for researchers developing, building, documenting, packaging, releasing, and deploying software tools, libraries, and servers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in computer science, software engineering, or related field
Experience
  • Experience building software packages and/or containers using Docker or singularity
  • Understanding of Linux TCP/IP networking, routing, iptables/nftables, containers, and filesystems
  • Experience developing CI workflows on Github, Travis, Jenkins, or other framework
  • Experience with Linux scripting in bash and Python
  • Basic exposure to some scientific software packages
  • Experience with open source software on Github
  • Familiarity with Python programming and packaging
  • Experience deploying web applications with Kubernetes, AWS, heroku, or other cloud service

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • The full-time annual compensation range for the Senior DevOps Engineer level is $180,000 - $240,000, depending on experience.
  • The full-time annual compensation range for the DevOps Engineer level is $140,000 - $180,000, depending on experience.
