Job Description
The Position


Current vacancy is a temporary, non-benefited position. The list developed from this recruitment will be used for a limited period to send selected applicants to a law enforcement academy. Female applicants encouraged to apply.


The current recruitment is to openly recruit for an individual to send through the law enforcement academy for future appointment as a Deputy Sheriff-Coroner I. If selected, you would be paid while attending the academy. The individual selected as Deputy Sheriff-Coroner In Training must successfully complete the academy. This temporary position ends at either the successful or unsuccessful completion of the academy. In order to be eligible to be hired as a Deputy Sheriff-Coroner I after completion of the academy, it is the responsibility of the trainee to complete the mandatory application process.


In non-sworn status, attends a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) approved Basic Academy and successfully completes the Academy's course of study to acquire peace officer status in the State of California; and in a non-sworn capacity perform related duties as required.

Job Requirements And Minimum Qualifications


Duties may include but are not limited to the following:


  • Acquires a basic knowledge of the penal code and police powers; learns to apply various penal code sections to simulated situations.
  • Complies with the rules, regulations, and policies imposed on trainees by the academy; fulfills requirements and standards of attendance, academic and physical performance.
  • Performs related duties, tasks, and assignments as required by academy staff and the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.
  • Attends classroom and physical agility training at a California P.O.S.T. certified basic police academy.
  • Participates in classroom work and independent study while attending a police academy.
  • Attends required training or other meetings.
  • Performs a wide variety of physical exercises in preparation for the physical demands placed on a sworn peace officer.
  • Learns the various laws of arrest, search and seizure (P.C. 832) and acquires skill and proficiency in the use of approved firearms.


Minimum Qualifications Required


Education and Experience:


High School diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of related education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must successfully pass criminal history and other background checks. Must not be prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.


Licenses And Certifications


Valid Driver's License - Class "C" or better


Possession of a CPR Certificate

  • Basic spelling, punctuation, and grammar, as well as arithmetic concepts typical of that derived from basic coursework in these subjects at the high school level.
  • Basic knowledge of current law enforcement policies, practices and methods.
  • Applicable state, federal and local ordinances, laws, rules and regulations.
  • All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job.
  • Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.

  • Meet the physical requirements of a Basic Peace Officer Standard Training (P.O.S.T.) academy.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, run and sit; reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate machinery/tools; handle, seize, hold or otherwise work with hands; climb, jump or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; speak and hear; use shape, sound, odor and color perception and discrimination; and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing;
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Compose clear and concise reports and correspondence.
  • Demonstrate an acceptable level of skill and proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;

Written testing for qualified applicants is currently scheduled for July 18, 2023.

Those who pass the written exam will be invited to participate further in the selection process.


  • Candidates cannot test within 30 days of previous written POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) exam.

Special Requirements: Eligibility is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal history and other background investigations including fingerprinting and a polygraph examination. SALARY


Compensation is based on a five-step salary range, with annual merit-based increases within the salary range.

HOLIDAYS AND PERSONAL LEAVE


Mendocino County observes 11 paid holidays per year. Employees are granted 24 - 48 hours of personal leave annually, depending upon Bargaining Unit.


VACATION


Accrues at the rate of two weeks per year for three years. Three weeks per year after three years, four weeks after eight years and five weeks after 15 years.


SICK LEAVE


Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of 1.25 days per month, or 15 days per year. Accruals are pro-rated for part-time employees working at least 20 hours per week. Part-time employees working less than 20 hours per week, and extra-help employees receive up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of paid sick leave annually.

The County and the employee share the cost of an employee selected health care plan; enrollment in the plan includes $20,000 Life Insurance.
