About The Position


The Transportation Deputy Director provides people-centric leadership in planning, designing, building, operating, and maintaining the county’s transportation system. The Deputy Director provides significant input and guidance to the Director, influencing decisions that direct the operations of the department, and has the responsibility for directing the management of the Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSMO), Engineering, Administrative Services, and Asset Management Divisions.

We Require


  • Registration as a Civil Engineer by the Arizona State Board of Technician Registration, or by the technician board of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of hire
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
  • Eight (8) years of increasingly responsible engineering or transportation systems experience with four (4) years of directly related supervisory and/or management experience
  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering, planning, business, public administration, or related field
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver’s license

Job Contributions


  • Identifies areas for organizational improvement and initiates changes to improve organizational efficiency.
  • Represents the Director in high-level meetings with County management, the Board of Supervisors, and outside agencies.
  • Contributes to the establishment, implementation, and continuous improvement of countywide roadway systems policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Acts as the appointing authority in the Director’s absence.
  • Analyzes department results and recommends improvements to the Director.
  • Authorizes division budget requests and determines priorities and alternate sources of funding.
  • Plans, schedules, and manages the TSMO, Engineering, Administrative Services, and Asset Management Divisions.
  • Ensures the County’s compliance with state and federal laws related to roadway issues.


Working Conditions


Work may be performed in an office environment, outdoors (subject to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration), in a vehicle (subject to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, and other workspace restrictions including travel), or in a field environment (subject to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations). The job may occasionally require lifting of items and objects weighing up to 20 pounds occasionally, and up to 10 pounds frequently, and requires walking or standing to a significant degree. The employee will regularly use Microsoft Office Suite and proprietary county software. The following protective equipment will be provided: hard hat, safety shoes, and safety vest.
