Job Title: Dental Dispensary Technician I – II (Open-Rank)

Job Summary:
This open-rank Dental Dispensary Technician position will decontaminate, clean, and provide basic maintenance of instruments and equipment in the dental operatories and clinical units as assigned. To provide support in assigned clinical units. including undergraduate dental student clinics, in all areas of four handed dentistry which include, but not limited to, restorative, periodontal, surgical, and all other related procedures.
Positions hired at the Dental Care Assistant II (Dental Dispensary Technician II) level will be responsible for the same responsibilities as those in the Dental Care Assistant II (Dental Dispensary Technician I) in addition to added responsibilities unique to the higher level.

Key Responsibilities:
Instrument Sterilization:
Responsibilities at the Technician I level (80%):
- Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize various SDM instruments, equipment, and sanitizing machines according to established procedures and techniques.
- Disassemble, inspect, test, and ensure the proper functioning of instruments and equipment.
- Learn and understand the principles of sterilization and sterile processing.
- Serves as a backup/support for the central sterilization unit.
- Prepares sterilization instruments set-ups for undergraduate students, residents, faculty to be used during dental patient treatment.
- Inspects and verifies proper functioning of sterilization equipment.
- Executes various sterilization processes and workflows, as assigned.
Additional responsibilities at the Technician II level (40%):
- Responds to questions/inquiries of students, faculty, residents, and staff by providing guidance /assistance as needed.
- Creates and maintains accurate inventory, sterilization, and testing records and logs using a computer, laser wand, or scanner for barcode entry; runs reports.
- Operates all equipment in sterile processing including, but not limited to, steam sterilizers, biological incubators, heat sealers, instrument, and cart washers.
Instrument and Equipment Management:
- Troubleshoot and address sterilization equipment issues.
- Document checked-out instruments/equipment using clinical inventory business application.
- Maintain stock of supplies and materials needed in support of patient care.
- Issue sterile reusable instruments/equipment to operatories and clinical units.
- Responsibilities at the Technician I level (15%):
Additional responsibilities at the Technician II level (35%):
- Troubleshooting patient care equipment. (i.e., operatory equipment, glucose, meter, blood pressure monitor, stethoscope).
- Conduct inspection/audits of sterilization and patient equipment.
- Maintain sterilized instrument inventory levels.
Learning & Development (5%):
Responsibilities at the Technician I level:
- Ensures department, school, and university policies and procedures are followed.
- Participates and engages in department, school, and university learning and development.
Additional responsibilities at the Technician II level:
- Supports colleagues on understanding principles of sterilization and sterile processing.
Audit & Quality Assurance Coordination (10%):
Responsibilities at the Technician II level only:
- Audit sterilization and infection control processes (i.e., mask, PPE, etc.).
- Sterilization and dispensing quality control log maintenance.
Chairside Assistance (5%):
- Patient preparation and positioning
- Clinical area preparation for the treatment of patients
- Testing clinic equipment
- Assists undergraduate students and faculty in the undergraduate clinic and advises undergraduate students in specialized areas of four-handed dentistry. Duties may include:
- Patient preparation and positioning
- Clinical area preparation for the treatment of patients
- Perform intraoral and extraoral radiographs using appropriate equipment and technique.
- Testing clinic equipment
- Perform intraoral and extraoral radiographs using appropriate equipment and technique.

Dental Dispensary Technician I:
- Substitution: Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience. NOTE: If exercising the education substitution, applicants MUST attach a copy of their dental assisting certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.
- Current valid CPR and/or BLS certification
- One year of current dental assisting experience.
- Substitution: Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience. NOTE: If exercising the education substitution, applicants MUST attach a copy of their dental assisting certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Dental Dispensary Technician II:
- Current valid CPR and/or BLS certification.
- Two years of current dental assisting experience.
- Substitution: Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience. NOTE: If exercising the education substitution, applicants MUST attach a copy of their dental assisting certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.

Preferred Qualifications (All Levels):
- Experience working with sterilizing and dispensing dental instruments, and equipment.
- Current dental assisting experience that includes, but not limited to, decontamination, cleaning, sterilizing, and maintenance of dental instruments and equipment.
- Experience with clinical area preparation in a dental clinic and/or office.
- Experience with dental instrument terminology.
- Experience working with students and faculty in a higher education and/or academic medical environment.
Additional Preferred Qualifications (Dental Dispensary Technician II Level):
- Two years of current dental assisting experience specific to the dental care specialty/unit, that includes, but not limited to, decontamination, cleaning, sterilizing, and maintenance of dental instruments and equipment.
- Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program.
Condition of Employment: Must be willing and able to…
- Complete the State of Colorado background check process.
- Eligible for a State of Colorado Surgical Assistant (SA) Original License, with the ability to maintain an active surgical license.

The starting hiring range for this position has been established as:
Dental Dispensary Technician I: $3,002 - $3,482 per month
Dental Dispensary Technician II: $3,153 - $3,657 per month
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
