Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Assists in the examination and treatment of dental patients by tracking patient information, documenting the dental record, assisting with in-office procedures and testing, administering medications and providing patient and caregiver education. Duties are performed under the oversight and direction of professional clinical staff and dentists in an Academic/Residency practice. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares for the day by meeting with the residents prior to the start of patient care and reviewing treatment scheduled for the day. Ensures each treatment room is prepared with all necessary instruments and materials for the procedure.
  • Anticipates dentist’s needs for each procedure during treatment, mixes and manipulates dental materials, uses high-velocity oral evacuation methods.
  • Reviews the current health status of all patients by interviewing and noting any changes in the patient’s record. If there are changes, notify the doctor before treatment has begun.
  • Assists the resident chairside in providing successful treatment for the patient using four-handed dentistry. Provides support for the patient during all phases of the appointment.
  • Assists with patients who have special needs.
  • Assists with patient management, renders medical assistance in emergencies.
  • Takes clinically excellent photographic and radiographic images of patients and arranges them correctly in the patient’s chart.
  • Efficiently takes alginate impressions within a timely way to produce quality plaster models, including those for study models and opposing models for crown and bridge. Trims study models and models to be mounted.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment. Responsible for sterilization of all instruments, disinfection of all surfaces and maintenance of autoclave, including cleaning and monitoring effectiveness. Reports repair and maintenance needs.
  • Instructs in the use and care of dental appliances.
  • Applies nonprescription anesthetic solution.
  • Orders, stocks and organizes operatory supplies.
  • Participates in staff meetings.
  • As time permits, assists other staff members in need of help.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. Associate Degree preferred. Successful completion of accredited/approved Dental Assisting education program.

CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE: Must have completed an accredited/approved radiography course resulting in Dental Radiography Certification. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 2-3 years of clinical experience (excluding externships). Experience assisting in all phases of dentistry. Experience with electronic record keeping preferred.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS):

  • Knowledge of dental clinic procedures, dental materials and procedures.
  • Knowledge of digital radiographs, including panorex and computed tomography according to standard procedures or specific instructions.
  • Demonstrated competency in efficient chairside assisting, taking clinically excellent photographic and radiographic images and outstanding alginate impressions.
  • Proficient/knowledgeable in dental terminology.
  • Follows current infection control standards pertaining to OSHA and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Proficiency in operating a standard desktop and Windows-based computer system, including but not limited to, electronic dental records, digital radiography, email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required while performing the essential functions of the job.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal forms, including proper phone etiquette.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment; displays courteous and friendly demeanor.
  • Ability to work effectively with various levels of organizational members and diverse populations including IHA staff, providers, patients, vendors, family members, outside customers and community groups.
  • Ability to cross-train in other areas of practice in order to achieve smooth flow of all operations.
  • Good organizational and time management skills to effectively juggle multiple priorities, time constraints and ever-changing medical/dental situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations needed during the course of performing basic job duties.
  • Knowledge of the compliance aspects of clinical care, patient privacy and best practices in dental office operations.
  • Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner.
  • Ability to monitor, organize, stock, prepare and keep treatment rooms and sterilization areas clean; maintains dental supply inventory in clinical areas.
  • Ability to travel to other office/practice sites and meeting and training locations.
  • Successful completion of IHA competency-based program within introductory and training period.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Physical activity that often requires keyboarding, phone work and charting.
  • Physical activity that often requires time working on a computer.
  • Physical activity that may require lifting over 50 lbs.
  • Physical activity that often requires handling and lifting patients, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, kneeling and/or twisting.
  • Physical activity that sometimes requires lifting, pushing and/or pulling up to 100 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment.
  • Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.

MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:

This job operates in a medical facility and requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital/clinic. Employees will be working where there is patient care equipment. Hazardous materials, including bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids are also present. Exposure to sharps, x-rays, patients' conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases are possible. This position requires significant interaction with people (many of whom are scared, hurt and/or ill) which can be stressful and result in competing priorities.
