Job Description
TITLE: Dean of Students
POSITION NO: P09695
DIVISION: Tallahassee Collegiate Academy
HIRING SALARY: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 annually; negotiable based on education and experience
HOURS: 7:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M., Monday – Friday.

MAJOR FUNCTION: The Dean reports to the Principal, with broad responsibilities to maintain a positive learning environment, the health and welfare of students, and support for students who are dual-enrolled. The Dean of Students is a member of the school leadership team. Provides counsel/assistance to faculty and parents in utilizing effective behavior modification techniques. Provides Social-Emotional Learning leadership to the school, and aids students in their growth as they work to dual-enroll. Develops relationships with businesses and the community in order to recruit interest for our place-based educational experiences, assists in the leadership of STEM Immersion Week, Assists the school counselor with career planning initiatives, Lead administrator on our Florida Ready to Work initiatives. This role serves as a liaison between and among the Principal, teachers, student body, parents, the College and members of the community. TCA will take a student-centered approach, facilitating the development of subject area, leadership, critical thinking and analytical skills in each of their students. The Dean of Students serves as an essential guide for students, in collaboration with the administration and school counselor. The following describes the Dean of Student’s duties:
Primary duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Inform administration of impending problems or events of unusual nature;
  • Complete investigative and due-process procedures to include disciplinary action;
  • Use relevant student information as an integral part of recommendations for suspension and expulsion (i.e., Individual Education Plan (IEP);
  • Assists with Exceptional Student Services and serves on the MTSS team
  • Coordinate schedules of supervision during high traffic movement;
  • Provide guidance to and instruction for teachers in the implementation of discipline policies and school safety, with training provided as needed;
  • Works collaboratively with the School Resource Officer and Principal on all SESIR events
  • Design short-and long-range plans related to student discipline and school safety using current research, performance data, and feedback from staff, students, parents and community agencies;
  • Work with Administration, Guidance Counselor and ESE teacher to recommend additional services referred students might benefit from;
  • Ability to apply principles of conflict resolution, problem-solving, behavior modification, public relations, interaction management, supervision, planning, organizing, and analyzing data;
  • Maintain FOCUS database of all suspensions;
  • Supports student intern/extern placement, as appropriate for 11th and 12th graders in their degree pathway;
  • Provide written documentation, when needed, of acute behavior problems experienced by referred students;
  • Assist in the development of guidelines for proper student conduct, disciplinary policies, and procedures that ensure a safe and orderly environment;
  • Be aware of emergency plans and implement during the drills and real emergencies;
  • Maintain visibility and accessibility on the school campus and at school-related activities and events during workday;
  • Serve as the SEL lead for the school;
  • Establish effective communication with outside agencies and make appropriate referrals for health, community services, social work, juvenile, or psychological;
  • Counsel individual students and, when necessary, make appropriate recommendations for testing, guidance, psychological counseling, or community services;
  • Recognize indicators of disruption of the orderly conduct of the school and implement strategies;
  • Supervises student movement in all aspects of the school environment including the cafeteria, buses, crowd control, and hall traffic;
  • Assists the school counselor and administration in the development of support plans for students who may be struggling in dual-enrollment coursework, in order to maintain the provisions as outlined in the dual-enrollment agreement and ensure success of every student;
  • Perform any other duties not specifically defined above, as requested by the Principal, Assistant Principal;
  • Assists the principal in planning, implementing, and evaluating the school’s instructional program based on student needs of those in dual enrollment;
  • Provide supervision of the in-school suspension room and related assignments;
MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: Valid Florida Professional Educator’s Certificate. Three (3) years of related professional experience. Master’s Degree from an accredited educational institution in Educational Leadership or Public Administration Preferred strong preference given to those with experience with Exceptional Student Education, Behavior Modification Techniques, Communications and Marketing, Human Resources (Hiring, Practices and Coaching), Soft Skills Training, Experience in corporate environments a plus
