Job Description
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Note for US based roles: Any offer of employment is contingent on providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination prior to your start date, subject to approved medical and/or religious exemptions, in accordance with applicable law.

About The Role

The New York Times is a technology company committed to producing the world’s most reliable and highest quality journalism. Our ability to do so relies on a talented team of expert technologists who help NYT learn from a tremendous abundance of data unique to this company.

The Algorithmic Recommendations team (Algo Recs) aims to help users discover content across the Times' website, apps and emails by applying algorithms that make use of information about our readers' behavior and our editorial judgment. We are a group of data scientists and data analysts that partner with teams across The New York Times. We are looking for a Data Scientist to join the Data Science Group and apply machine learning methods to our targeted email strategy. You will report to a Lead Data Scientist on Algo Recs, and collaborate with partners across the company. You would have the option of working onsite in New York, hybrid, or fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Develop algorithms and run experiments to improve targeted email campaigns (including audience creation, timing, and content selection)
  • Collaborate with end-users of data products and respond to partner needs
  • Reframe business and newsroom goals as machine learning tasks that deliver accurate predictions, relevant insights, and optimization
  • Present and discuss data science work with colleagues and business and newsroom partners
  • Turn models into data products, collaborate with engineering teams, and integrate into processes throughout The Times

Basic Qualifications

  • You have experience coding in production environments using Python and SQL
  • You have experience with data cleaning, preparation, feature engineering, and model selection techniques using open source machine learning and statistical analysis tools
  • You have experience in A/B testing and experimental design
  • 3+ years data science experience or a PhD or MS in statistics, computational social science, applied mathematics, or another quantitative/computational discipline

Preferred Qualifications

  • You have experience communicating complex ideas in data science to audiences with varying degrees of technical background
  • You are comfortable translating complex and sometimes ambiguous business questions into machine learning problems
  • You have experience with end-to-end deployment of data products that are integrated into company process
  • You are proficient at exploring data and deploying models in Google Cloud Platform
  • You have experience applying machine learning to email campaigns (optimizing timing, content selection, or audience creation) and are familiar with recommendation systems, including content-based methods using natural language processing

If you see a job opening here that might be a good fit for you, we encourage you to apply. We offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision plans for employees and their families, health and wellness programs, a 401(k) plan, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation, paid parental leave, and much more.

The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.
