Works under general supervision in the Dairy Barn at the Farm-in-the-Zoo. This is a seasonal position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Works closely with animal keepers and volunteers to ensure safety of animals and guests.
- Alerts keepers of behavioral changes noticed by self or guests.
- Performs routine husbandry with cows and goats.
- Interacts with and supervises guests entering the dairy barn and contact area.
- Assists in maintaining dairy barn, including basic husbandry, maintenance and cleaning.
- Performs various tasks and other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL REPONSIBILITIES
- May use vehicle for zoo pick-ups and deliveries.
- May use electric cart and/or tractor to move dumpsters or supplies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Ability to clearly communicate verbally in English.
- Ability to work in a contact animal situation.
- Comfort with working with children.
- Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, zoo visitors and general public
- Ability to read English and understand written and oral instructions.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- High School degree (or equivalent)
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Experience in a contact animal situation preferred. Experience working with children preferred.
Note: A comparable combination of education, experience or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills and ability required may qualify individuals.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to move on frequent basis up to 50 lbs.
Ability to remain on feet for long periods.
Ability to bend, move, position and ascend.
Ability to operate and safely drive electric carts.
No allergy to plants or animals that may interfere with the ability to work.
Ability to work in all weather conditions.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Available to work special events that may occur outside of regular work schedule as assigned.
Valid driver’s license with good driving record is preferable.
Compensation: $15.40/hr.
