Individuals in the Impounds Unit Customer Service Representative role will engage with community members while striving for excellence in providing exceptional customer service to members of the Tucson Community and the Tucson Police Department. A career as a Customer Service Representative requires that individuals uphold the highest standards of ethics and integrity. Under direct supervision, incumbents in this position are responsible for the maintenance, verification, research, and analysis of impound vehicle releases and reports utilizing multiple databases.

This position is also accountable for ensuring compliance with pertinent laws, rules, regulations, and administrative policy when responding to, in addition to processing and fulfilling, vehicle releases, alarm registrations and assessments. This position is also responsible for issuing overweight/oversized permit applications for the City of Tucson. Change is constant, and the pace requires excellent multitasking abilities. Incumbents must be open to novel experiences, performing in a team environment, and a willingness for cultivation and development. The work schedule consists of four (4) 10-Hour Days per week, 0730 – 1730 (Days on and off will be determined by the need of the unit).

General Description

Provides customer service, and performs clerical duties. Processes and authorizes appropriate payments for services.

Essential Functions

Provides customer service by answering telephones, greeting customers, providing information, processes applications for service, responding to requests, handling problems and irate customers, researching inquiries and discrepancies, following up on complaints and concerns and coordinating and communicating with field personnel.

Performs clerical duties by preparing and maintaining files, records and logs, picking up and distributing mail, maintaining and ordering supplies, entering and correcting information in the computer system, completing, distributing and processing work orders, transcribing documents, processing time cards and payroll, maintaining schedules and calendars, preparing travel orders, correspondence, purchase orders, and various reports and forms, processing various customer billings, copying, faxing, accepting deliveries, and notifying appropriate staff.

Manages accounts by accepting payments, preparing deposits, balancing accounts and preparing invoices for payment.

Performs related duties such as: processing reservations and training requests, inputting, processing, and issuing permits, licenses and applications, assigning cases, inspecting and cutting film, receiving and processing plans, certifying truck weights, accepting and sorting household and automotive wastes, ordering garbage and recycling containers, translating as necessary, coordinating training classes, maintaining parking administration waiting lists, tickets, payments and permits and maintaining vending machines.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 1 year experience in customer service and operation of a computer and office equipment, and handling money and other forms of payment

Special Job Requirements

Processes vehicle release documentation for violations of Arizona Revised Statutes 28-3511 (Mandatory Impound), in addition to the processing of City of Tucson alarm registrations/assessments and Oversize/Overweight permits within the City of Tucson city limits.

Performs related duties such as: inputting, processing, updating, and issuing overweight/oversized permit applications; handling currency, credit cards, and checks when accepting and processing payments from Alarm registrations and assessments; preparing and processing deposits; issuing vehicle release forms and operation agreements; coordination and status verifications with Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles and fellow law enforcement agencies; impound hearing preparation.

Arizona Criminal Justice Information System Network Terminal Operator Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a municipality
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) - Qualified bilingual employees are eligible to receive additional pay after successful completion of a communicative examination.
  • Experience utilizing multiple software platforms, to include Microsoft (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and their responses to the supplemental questions.

The 15 highest scoring applicants will be invited to participate in the following examinations:

Oral Board Interviews will be conducted the week of August 28, 2023.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on a Civil Service Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service Eligibility List will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 80% - Oral Board Interview
  • 20% - Education and Work Experience


This recruitment will establish a Civil Service Eligibility List that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next six months.

The highest scoring candidates placed on the Civil Service Eligibility List may be invited to participate in a Selection Interview. If Selection Interviews are held, the date, time, and location will be provided at a later time.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Eligibility List.
