Salary Range:

  • CSU Salary Range: $3,338 -$4,490 per month
  • The hiring salary is anticipated at $3,338 per month commensurate with experience.

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Manager of Custodial Services, the incumbent is responsible for the cleanliness of all assigned buildings on campus and the Training Ship Golden Bear while moored at the Academy.

Examples of duties include sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, refinishing floors, cleaning classrooms, laboratories, locker rooms, chalkboards, windows, and walls, emptying trash, cleaning and re-stocking restrooms, locking and unlocking doors, and cooperating with faculty and students in moving and special set-ups. These duties include the general cleaning of areas adjacent to the buildings such as patios, entryways, and walkways.

About California State University Maritime Academy:

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Major Responsibilities:

CLEANING:

  • Sweeps, scrubs, mops, vacuums, and applies finishes to floors and/or stairways, hallways, and elevators; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; operates industrial floor buffers, scrubbers, and high-speed burnishes and carpet extractor cleaning equipment requiring the use of both hands to control and maneuver equipment; cleans restrooms, showers, toilet facilities, lobbies, offices, and conference and meeting rooms; cleans ceilings, walls, window shades, mini-blinds, and light fixtures; cleans windows (interior and exterior); and sweeps areas adjacent to buildings such as patios, entryways, and walkways.

MAINTAINING EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES:

  • Prepares and submits requisitions and storeroom supply order forms for janitorial supplies located in assigned storage closets to the Lead Custodian for approval and actual ordering.
  • Maintains janitorial equipment in a clean and orderly manner, ensures equipment is operable at all times.
  • Maintains adequate and constant supplies of soap, towels, toilet tissue, toilet seat liners, and sanitary napkins/tampons.

TRASH REMOVAL AND RECYCLING:

  • Removes and gathers recyclables from containers in offices, special event sites, and special clean-up sites and delivers them to areas of central aggregation.
  • Removes trash from facilities on a daily basis. Cleans and disinfects waste receptacles when necessary.
  • Removes trash and debris from areas adjacent to the buildings including patios, entryways, and walkways.

HEALTH AND SAFETY AND EVENT SET-UP:

  • Close and lock doors upon the completion of assignments. Report any unusual sights, sounds or odors immediately to the appropriate personnel. Report all unusual activities, unsafe conditions and accidents to the Lead Custodian and/or the Director
  • Participates in departmental and safety meetings and in-service training as needed.
  • Provides assistance with set-ups and preparation for special CMA functions and events (moving chairs, tables, umbrellas, extension cords, flags, portable lighting, etc.)

Required Qualifications:

Ability to:

  • Read and write English at a level appropriate for the duties of the position;
  • Observe and use health, safety, and security working practices. For example, all required safety equipment is to be used during the course of duties on a daily basis, such as rubber gloves, masks, etc. Close and lock doors upon the completion of assignments. Report any unusual sights, sounds or odors immediately. Report all unusual activities, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the Lead Custodian and/or the Manager.
  • Interact with co-workers, supervisors, faculty and staff in a cooperative and team environment;
  • Understand and follow instructions on a daily calendar, communication logs, IIPP safety information, work orders and product labels;
  • Operate vacuum cleaners, floor machines, carpet extractors, and water hoses;
  • Work individually or in a team in a service-oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities;
  • Respond to emergency calls;
  • Provide excellent customer service to faculty, staff, and students. Act as a Facilities Management customer service representative to the campus community.

Knowledge of:

  • Must maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Use and care of janitorial supplies and equipment.
  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance of buildings in a safe and healthy manner;

Special Conditions: A physical will be required upon hire.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Conditions:

  • Works, on occasion, in excess heat, cold, humidity, dampness and dry atmospheric conditions for short periods of time;
  • 50% or more of the activities involve walking, standing, squatting, kneeling or climbing, which involves lifting heavy weight objects which may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Works in multi-story buildings that do not have elevator access
  • Works inside and outside with chemicals and other possible hazardous materials and substances in a safe manner;
  • Operates power and hand tools related to custodial functions;
  • Occasional exposure to blood and other bodily fluids.

Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, DMV records check and fingerprinting) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
