Overview
T he Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Specialist (C.I.A. Specialist) provides direct and indirect instructional services to students. The C.I.A. Specialist works collaboratively with classroom teachers to assess student’s abilities and needs and to plan instructional and prescriptive programs which align with the student’s IEP and the school-wide curriculum framework.
In addition, the C.I.A. Specialist defines, guides and supports the implementation of “best practices” in the delivery of instructional services within the classroom. The C.I.A. Specialist provides in-service training, mentoring and technical assistance to classroom teachers as needed.
At the Fairmount Campus, we are committed to providing special education program in which the uniqueness of each student is valued and understood. We want to enable students to reach their potential in all aspects of life – academically, socially and behaviorally – and help lead them toward the ultimate goal of nurturing their independence now and in the future.
Our curriculum focuses on building essential skills based on standards and curricula identified by the Maryland State Department of Education. Students receive ongoing instruction in reading/English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, health, music, fine arts and career development.
We are a nonpublic special education day program approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. We operate on an 11-month program schedule.

Responsibilities
- Insure the appropriate administration, data collection and reporting of informal, formal and state–wide assessments.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to assigned teachers and classrooms to ensure best practices in the delivery of instructional services.
- Prepare, design and provide in-service training as needed.
- Provide direct, diagnostically- based instructional services to students as needed.
- Contribute to the completion of IEPs, progress reports, and other written documents as required.
- Attend team meeting, program-wide meetings, PTMs, ATMs and other meetings as needed.
EDUCATION:
- Master’s degree in special education or a related instructional area is required.
- A minimum of five years teaching experience with Special Education populations is required.
- PCM will be provided by the department, according to the individual program requirements. Employee must achieve and maintain certification (at the “Practitioner” level or higher for PCM, although Practitioner II certification is highly preferred) according to the timeline established within the departmental policy.
- MSDE teacher certification is required.
