The Courthouse Police Officer is a commissioned law enforcement officer position with the Courthouse Police Department. The Courthouse Police Officer works under the direct supervision of the Police Sergeant. He/she provides safety and security services in protecting the courts, employees, and citizens who occupy or use the Courthouse and other County facilities. The Courthouse Police Officer has statutory powers of arrest.


Provides safety and security functions to preserve the public peace, and insures that dangerous items are kept out of the Courthouses.


  • The officer works in the lobby (which includes, the point position, the tray, hand scanner, and X-ray machine positions)
  • At the x-ray position he/she will visually check the image of all scanned property and ensure that the property is picked up by the person who placed it on the belt.
  • At the Control Center he/she will screen to ensure unauthorized people, weapons and other dangerous/illegal objects/substances do not enter the building. He/she will monitor cameras, answer telephone in a professional manner, monitor the Courthouse alarms, and will gather necessary caller information, and dispatch officers as needed.
  • From the point position, he/she will greet and instruct the public on how to x-ray their belongings and approach and clear the metal detectors
  • At the tray position, he/she safely and efficiently greets and directs the public through the metal detectors, while physically hand searching their property.
  • At the hand scan position he/she will hand scan completely, checking ankles by hand, and check all points that sound the hand scanner.
  • The officer provides lobby-screening to ensure unauthorized people, weapons and other dangerous/illegal objects/substances do not enter the building.


Provides safety and security functions to preserve the public peace, by Roving Patrols-to deter illegal activities and confrontations, by a visual uniformed presence, and provides assistance to citizens.


  • The officer will issue parking citations as warranted.
  • The officer will escort persons as needed inside and outside the Courthouse. He/she will make cases on police incidents, and will log required counts on the appropriate forms.
  • The officer provides a thorough check of the entire Courthouse complex by exterior and interior patrols.


The Courthouse Police Officer provides safety and security services for the Courthouses, the District courts, and other county facilities as needed.


  • Officers will detain suspects as needed, and will conduct arrests as required. He/she will complete a detailed incident report per policy.
  • Officers will respond quickly to calls for assistance notifying the Control Center as to the nature of the incident or event.
  • Officers will detain and arrest on commitment orders by a Judge or Hearing officer, or when notified of the existence of a warrant.
  • The officer will standby to protect a Judge, Jury, and courtroom occupants from possible harm as needed.


Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent. 6 months minimum in a related field. Kansas Certified Law Enforcement Officer-Free of Brady/Giglio issues. Maintain 40 hours of annual training. Maintain proficiency in annual firearms qualification. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas drivers license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.


Preferred Qualifications: 5 years of law enforcement experience. A sound history of stable job responsibility. Good Customer Service Skills.
