Position Announcement

The Pre-Professional Advisement Center (PPAC) is looking for a part-time academic counselor to join our dynamic team. If you have a passion for working with students while assisting them on their road to success, this is the department for you!Working under supervision of the Director of the Pre-Professional Advisement Center, participates in the delivery of academic advising, career counseling services, and programs that promote successful graduation and admission into professional medical programs for students. Responsible for a diverse advising caseload. Meets the academic advising needs of individuals or groups of students seeking admission into professional programs. Monitors analytics that inform student success, and provides strategic outreach to enable degree completion.

Summary Of Responsibilities

• (20%) Responds to informational requests in regards to Pre-Nursing from potential students, staff, high school counselors and the general public and creates and/or updates informational materials. Interprets and explains university policies and procedures as needed.
• (15%) Collaborates with faculty and staff in order to problem-solve and provide accurate information concerning program changes, assessment guidelines, course and instructor information, transfer issues, scholarships, and appropriate referrals.
• (15%) Serves as a member of the Advisement Forum and participates in meetings, activities and events as required. Represents the department on any relevant university committees, departmental committees or professional associations/organizations as needed and/or assigned.
• (50%) Maintains a Pre-Nursing case load of incoming and continuing undergraduate students, including student advisement records. Counsels students regarding the development of meaningful educational plans compatible with their choice of career and vocational and life goals. Interprets psychological instruments and advises students regarding alternative majors and careers. Recommends curriculum and academic plans complimentary to their career choices. Advises students as they design and plan their academic schedules.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a master\'s degree in Counseling and Guidance, Educational Psychology, Social Work, or related Social Science field and two years of full-time professional employment related to the Summary of Duties or any combination of education and experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling 8 years.

• Ability to app y knowledge of career development and decision-making theory to help students define and integrate academic and career goals in order to promote student retention and academic success.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills using various communication media.
• Ability to creatively and independently solve problems by prioritizing and multitasking under pressure.
• Skills in administering, analyzing, and interpreting MBTI, STRONG and other psychological tests in order to help students acquire knowledge about self and Career Market during the counseling process.
• Knowledge in advising and teaching laws and techniques, including content, curriculum, and graduation requirements.
• Knowledge of the university\'s mission and strategic directions.
• Ability to serve individuals with diverse personalities.
• Knowledge of academic requirements, testing, and overall preparation requirements for Pre-Nursing.
• Skills in using microcomputers, computer terminals, and academic and office software platforms (BANNER) as applied to management of student records, report preparation, and related activities.
• Ability to anticipate departmental an d student needs.
