Job Description


Only applicants who meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements and meet all selective requirements (listed below) will be placed on the eligible list.


Under general direction, oversees the operation of the IMCC garden, planting, care, harvesting and spraying of the garden. This position will direct offender work crews in the garden area. Will be required to have a fruit and vegetables pesticides license. Help maintain the IMCC equipment in proper operating condition to provide safe equipment for everyone concerned. Work with Dietary to plant and deliver produce as needed. Will also be responsible for the flower gardens at the entrance to the facility. Complete all necessary record keeping as instructed. Supervising and training incarcerated individuals is required.


This position will also periodically perform other general repair tasks as assigned by the Plant Operations Manager; will assist other Correctional Trades Leaders, electricians, plumbers, carpenter and painter in completing assigned tasks.


The Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC) is a multi-faceted correctional institution that serves as the male reception center for the Iowa Department of Corrections as well as housing a forensic psychiatric hospital, short term ambulatory/long term ambulatory (STA/LTA), special needs unit and a hospice unit to name a few.


Selectives


006 Agriculture


6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours or a combination of both in agriculture or horticulture. The 6 months’ experience must include working on a farm.


Minimum Qualification Requirements


Experience equal to four years of full-time work in one or more of the recognized building (e.g., carpentry, painting, plumbing/pipefitting, electrical and masonry) and mechanical/repair (e.g., air conditioning/ heating, auto mechanics, upholstery, and welding) trades;


OR


an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting thirty semester hours of post high school education from an accredited college or university with major course work in a recognized building and mechanical trade for each year of the required experience;


OR


employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time experience as a Furniture Upholsterer, Mason, Maintenance Repairer, Carpenter 1 or 2, Painter 1 or 2, Plumber 1 or 2 and Welder.

Additional Qualification Requirements


Within a period of time, as determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to obtain a license to perform electrical work in accordance with Chapter 103, Iowa Code


Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain the required commercial driver's license and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
