Job Description
This is a Part-Time Recurring position. The hours will be variable weekly (as needed).


National Geographic is seeking a copy editor to copyedit National Geographic Kids nonfiction and fiction books on a project-by-project basis. The successful candidate will be detail oriented, self-motivated, and dedicated to maintaining editorial standards.


Key Accountabilities


  • Copyedit book-length manuscripts for the wide-ranging NatGeo Kids books (including children’s atlases, almanacs, and other reference books; leveled readers; fun, highly designed “kids-driven” books; gift books; and middle grade fiction) to ensure quality of grammar, punctuation, usage, and style—including but not limited to capitalization, spelling, hyphenation, use of numbers, and citation format; accuracy of certain verifiable information; and consistency between text and art.
  • Performs standard fact-checking, including review of personal names and place-names, dates, and similar facts.
  • Produce a list of words and names to be capitalized, italicized, hyphenated, spelled, or otherwise treated in a way unique to the project (a style sheet) and apply a consistent style throughout the manuscript.


Requirements:


  • College-level understanding of literature, grammar, style, and spelling
  • Ability to work with digital documents, using Word and Adobe software
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Capable of meeting tight deadlines, sometimes on short notice
  • Ability to manage meet deadlines and work independently
  • Flexibility working with an extensive National Geographic house style and individual series guidelines and nomenclature; familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition
  • 5 years’ experience as a copy editor, preferably in children’s and/or middle grade books


The hiring range for this remote position is $26.50 to $32.00 per hour. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
