Eos is the news magazine of AGU. The publication works with journalists and science writers to report daily on innovative Earth and space science results, produces in-depth features on research tends in the geosciences, and work with scientist authors to provide unique, behind-the-scenes perspectives on how they answer the most fascinating questions about the way our world works.


The Associate Editor is key in supporting the Managing Editor with developing daily science news and assisting the Eos production team with the print and digital editions.


WHAT YOU WILL DO?


  • Extend the reach of the publication by identifying and developing relationships for syndication.
  • Assist with the coordination of and payments to vendors.
  • Support the production team and the Editor in Chief in producing the monthly print magazine.
  • Generate story ideas, occasionally write articles, and coordinate to prioritize coverage.
  • Vet and select images for news articles and ensures proper credit and rights clearance.
  • Use WordPress to publish articles on Eos.org.
  • Attend AGU-wide editorial meetings and occasionally work with other AGU departments to produce articles and promote awareness of aligned Eos content.
  • Perform high-level quality control to ensure that Eos content is shaped to achieve the desired impact on readers and users.
  • Contribute to Eos social media presence by promoting articles and engaging with Eos’s active following.
  • Provide guidance on content and writing style and enforce Eos’s high standards of journalism.


WHAT YOU WILL BRING?


  • Experience with Office 360 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Effective and reliable teammate, working collaboratively with diverse people to elicit top-notch journalism.
  • Ability to convey complex ideas and technical language through effective, creative, and lively writing, editing, and storytelling.
  • Mid-level editor with ability to thoughtfully guide and rewrite news articles.
  • 5+ years of experience in journalism, science, or related field, with a bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and be flexible while meeting tight publication deadlines.
  • Ability to make scientific content relatable and compelling to public audiences.
  • Experience operating in a digital-first news environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit high-quality contributors and to network and collaborate to grow content and its impact.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Eye for detail and a good nose for news and news strategy.
  • Listening, coaching, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of taxonomy, tagging, and search engine optimization.
  • Proficiency with content management systems such as WordPress, and an ability to quickly.
  • Familiarity with science and science news. Specific knowledge of the Earth and space sciences and their impact is desirable.
  • Learn new systems such as project management applications and print production workflows.
