The Opportunity

Abbott Rapid Diagnostics is part of Abbott’s Diagnostics family of businesses, bringing together exceptional teams of experts and industry leading technologies to support diagnostic testing which provides important information for treatment and management of diseases and other conditions.

The position of Operational Excellence Engineer is within our Toxicology business unit located at Alere San Diego in San Diego, California. This role will support and lead implementation of initiatives identified in the Operational Excellence roadmap, which will help achieving best Lean Manufacturing Practices and realizing Cost Savings goals.

This job description will be reviewed periodically and is subject to change by management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Incorporate OpEx practices into systems, processes and protocols.
  • Assist the organization in the knowledge and understanding of metrics and measurements, which impact the total performance of the plant.
  • Understands and is aware of the quality consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job; has awareness of device defects that may occur in their area of responsibility, including product design, verification and validation, manufacturing and testing activities
  • Identify opportunities and drives incorporation of appropriate lean techniques, tools and philosophies to include standard work, material flow and value stream mapping, root cause analysis, 5S, and visual management control.
  • Identify and drive cost improvement projects.
  • Drive visual management and data understanding throughout the plant.
  • Lead Kaizen events.
  • Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company’s policies and practices; build productive internal/external working relationships
  • Deliver training on lean tools and OpEx initiatives; coach and support Yellow Belt candidates on proper use of tools and improvement processes.
  • Identify and work on business and/or manufacturing improvements with the use of lean and/or six sigma tools
  • Act as a change agent and help team members learn, understand, adjust and grow within a continuous improvement culture.
  • Lead and execute process improvement projects using OpEx/lean tools and techniques.
  • Through audits and assessments, ensure project metrics and timelines are reported via appropriate systems in a timely manner.
  • Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies
  • Identify, collect, monitor and report critical OpEx metrics as required.
  • Actively support the OpEx roadmap strategy in the plant.
  • Other duties as assigned, according to the changing needs of the business

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS | EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years of professional work experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Operations or Science

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Presentation skills
  • Knowledge in Power BI
  • Green Belt Lean Six Sigma
  • Computer skills (MS Office programs)
  • Design of fixtures/poke yoke
  • Project management skills
  • Working knowledge of improvement tools and methodologies
  • Lena manufacturing
