Job Description

Scott Humphrey has partnered with a large and reputable general contractor to find their new Staff Accountant for the corporate accounting team at their headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The Staff Accountant will play a critical role in managing the financial operations and ensuring accurate accounting practices for the company's corporate finances. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in accounting principles, along with specific knowledge and expertise in construction accounting. This position offers an excellent opportunity for professional growth and advancement within our organization.


Responsibilities:

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports for construction projects, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. Provide detailed financial analysis and insights to support decision-making processes.
  • Manage the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions for construction projects. Review invoices, process payments, and ensure timely collection of receivables. Reconcile vendor statements and resolve any discrepancies.
  • Stay updated on accounting regulations, including GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and industry-specific accounting standards for the construction industry. Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Assist in month-end and year-end closing activities, including preparing accruals, adjusting entries, and financial statement preparation. Coordinate with auditors during the audit process and provide necessary documentation and support.
  • Collaborate with project managers to develop project budgets and forecasts. Monitor project performance against budgeted targets and provide variance analysis. Identify potential risks and opportunities for cost savings.
  • Oversee project costing activities, including tracking and analyzing project costs, such as labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses. Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate and timely cost reporting.
  • Conduct financial analysis to evaluate project profitability, cost trends, and financial performance. Identify areas for improvement and provide recommendations to enhance financial efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Perform day-to-day accounting functions, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance. Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records related to construction projects.

Requirements:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with construction contracts, revenue recognition, and project costing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial analysis tools.
  • Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Procore, Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate, Viewpoint, or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience as a Staff Accountant, preferably in the construction industry.
