Position Description
The Office of Arts & Cultural Vitality (OACV) within the City of Tacoma's Community & Economic Development (CED) department is seeking a community-focused, creative, and detail-oriented individual for the position of Community Programs Specialist.
This position will plan, develop, coordinate and implement existing community-focused arts and cultural programs, workshops and professional development opportunities, and engagement efforts. They will also provide comprehensive communications support for OACV to inform community of cultural opportunities and funding impacts, and will provide administrative support and coordination on a variety of arts and culture initiatives.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong organizational, administrative, and communication skills who is passionate about arts, culture, and community, and who is committed to equity and inclusion.
Key Activities Include
  • Providing staff support for arts funding panels
  • Assessing community needs and coordinating the implementation of new responsive programs/activities
  • Assisting in the daily duties of administering OACV
  • Drafting news releases and conducting routine website updates
  • Planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing existing community-focused arts and culture events and programs including Tacoma Arts Month, Arts at the Armory, Tacoma Poet Laureate, and Creative Community Conversations, or similar programming. Includes establishing timelines; developing and coordinating partnerships and sponsorships; directing the work of programming contractors; facilitating planning committees; coordinating and facilitating artist selection processes; researching and compiling information; overseeing design of materials; promoting and marketing programs; coordinating volunteers; conducting evaluations; and compiling data.
  • Participating, presenting, and/or helping facilitate internal and external meetings and projects that intersect with arts and culture and community engagement
  • Coordinating ‘Resources for Creatives’ professional development program and other capacity building workshops, programs, panels, and lectures. Includes conducting research into community capacity building needs; developing content focus; lining up content experts; promoting programming; and conducting evaluations
  • Providing staff support for the Tacoma Arts Commission including communications, scheduling, co-facilitating subcommittee meetings, preparing and presenting relevant content, supporting technical needs, taking meeting minutes, and supporting related processes
  • Assisting with the research, development, and implementation of a technical assistance program to support artists, organizations, and groups in marketing and promotion of their public programming.
  • Performing related duties as necessary
  • Co-producing artTown show for TV Tacoma. Includes lining up segment topics and subject matter experts, interviewing guests, reviewing and providing feedback on segment editing, and promoting finished segments
  • Planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing public communications and marketing efforts for OACV on an active and regular basis, across various communication channels with a focus on digital communication. Research and share relevant content from partner agencies and present about opportunities and projects to community groups, as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in art, art history, fine arts, museum studies or directly related field
Minimum Experience*
2 years professional experience in art administration, program administration, museum curation or related

Licensing, Certifications And Other Requirements
Washington State Driver's License
Work Hours: This position will have a mix of in-office and remote work days. Occasional evenings and weekends required.

This is a competitive selection process.
