- Clarify instructions to clients, provide supportive counseling and information on health-related topics.
- Interview clients to document health conditions and determine eligibility for program participation.
- Obtain medical histories, record observations, maintain client records.
- Teach, speak and serve as a group facilitator for large groups of people.
- Order supplies and stock treatment rooms.
- Participate in community-oriented educational activities and programs.
- Independently preform work at outreach clinics and make home visits.
- Contact clients to inform them of test results and make referrals.
- Assist with medical procedures by preparing clients, and arranging supplies and instruments.
- Clean and sterilize instruments after procedures.
- Perform limited tests, take vital signs and collect specimens.
- Perform clinical tasks and administer medications, including injections, under the direction of the County Health Officer and/or Designee.
- Under supervision, contact individuals with confirmed communicable diseases and ask standardized questions to identify potentially exposed contacts.
- Locate individuals who are potentially exposed to communicable diseases, notify of exposure and required precautions such as testing, quarantine or other actions.
- Provide handouts and other reference material.
Experience:
One (1) year of experience performing a variety of medical duties (clerical and paraprofessional), either voluntary or paid, in a health care setting.
Education:
Completion of 15 semester units of college level course work in Behavioral Sciences, Biology, Social Services, Nutrition, Health Education, or a closely-related field.
License:
Possession of a valid Medical Assistant Certification.
Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.

- Function effectively as a health care team member.

- Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations.
- Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception.
- Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.
- Frequent use of hand-eye coordination.
- Frequent use of data entry device including repetitive hand and arm motion.
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
- Normal dexterity, frequent holding and grasping.
- Sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Frequent public contact, concentration in noisy conditions, exposure to emergency situations.
- Occasional exposure to hazardous materials, cold and heat.
- Regular attendance is an essential function.
Knowledge of:
- Basic human anatomy and physiology.
- Routine nursing techniques including first aid procedures.
- Methods and techniques of effective communication and interviewing.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective professional relationships.
- Obtain facts from client in sensitive situations.

HOLIDAYS & LEAVES
VACATION
10 days the first 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 160 hours), 15 days in the second 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 240 hours), and 20 days after 10 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 320 hours).
SICK LEAVE
.0462 hours sick leave for each paid regularly scheduled work hour. 12 days (96 hours per year) with unlimited accumulation. Optional annual buy back of a portion of accumulated sick leave hours upon meeting certain criteria.
HOLIDAYS
Twelve paid holidays annually plus one optional holiday.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
Three (3) regularly scheduled work days or five (5) days if distance traveled over 500 miles one-way.

Medical Insurance - Merced County offers five Medical Plans and contributes towards employee and dependent premiums. Medical plan availability varies based on bargaining units.

DISABILITY INSURANCE
State Disability Insurance - Benefit based on highest quarter during previous calendar year. Employee pays premium.
LIFE INSURANCE
$10,000 County-paid coverage (Accidental Death and Dismemberment included). Voluntary Term Life and Universal Life Insurance available - premium paid by employee.
RETIREMENT
DEFERRED COMPENSATION
The County offers a 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Employees choose their investment funds and can make pretax contributions to the plan up to the maximum allowable.

Anthem EAP services provides up to five face-to-face counseling sessions per incident and provides a toll-free "800" hotline available 24/7 for emergencies and crisis intervention. EAP services include counseling services, legal services, financial services and work-life resource services.
EMPLOYEE TICKETS, COUPONS, and DISCOUNTS
The County of Merced has partnered with Employee Savings Tickets to provide discounted coupons and tickets for all county employees to attractions throughout the state and out-of-state. The discounts and coupons are available for shopping, movies, sporting events, theme parks, zoos and aquariums and much more.
