Position Overview


  • The HESO seeks to hire a Project Manager to support the planning, implementation and assessment/research activities for the Kaiser Permanente-funded project, Strengthening the Interface of Public Health and Community Based Organizations (CBOs). The Project Manager will oversee relationships with national partners to identify and convene CBO and state/local public health partners in activities to develop actionable recommendations and an endorsed implementation roadmap for effective partnerships between CBOs and Public Health Department. The Project Manager will use equity-driven engagement approaches to collaborate with community, public, and private sector partners and to facilitate cross-sector discussions. In addition, the Project Manager will be responsible for designing and implementing qualitative research protocols, including a landscape assessment, in-depth key informant interviews, and focus groups, and collaborating with team members to analyze, summarize and disseminate findings from these activities. The Project Manager role is full-time at 100% FTE for up to 12 months, and is eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits as well as short- and long-term disability benefits. Qualifications and Necessary Skills


  • Advanced skills in project management, budget management, reporting, contracting, cross-cultural awareness communication, influence, negotiation, conflict resolution, and creative problem solving
  • Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills; collegial, energetic, and able to develop and maintain productive relationships with colleagues, donors, community organizations, and public health department partners
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience preparing, writing, and editing complex documents such as detailed reports to donors; briefing documents for CDC, donors, and other community-based partners; and peer-reviewed articles
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of public health experience at the national, state, and/or local level
  • Experience designing qualitative data collection protocols; conducting qualitative data collection activities (e.g., interviews, focus groups); and analyzing qualitative data for themes and insights
  • Master’s degree in public health or a related field from an accredited college or university preferred
  • Ability to represent the CDC Foundation and its partners, leading discussions and negotiations concerning project planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Knowledge of consensus-building approaches that foster public-private partnership between CBOs, the private sector, and state and local public health departments
  • Experience partnering with community-based organizations (CBOs) supporting public health and health equity initiatives, and/or familiarity with local and/or state governmental public health agency partnerships with CBOs
Duties and Responsibilities


  • Travel as needed up to 20%
  • Manages project administration, including budgeting, timelines, reporting, contracting, technical content development, and evaluation
  • Builds strong collaborative relationships across project partners, including internal collaborating CDC Foundation departments, project consultants, and community, CBO, and public health department partners and ensures that project deliverables reflect the insights gathered through collaborative strategies
  • Leads iterative, qualitative data collection activities, in partnership with internal and external team members, including protocol development, data collection processes and tools, recruitment plans and materials, data analysis and synthesis of insights into a coordinated set of recommendations and implementation plan and all project deliverables
  • Serves as overall project manager and oversees day-to-day operations, plans, and implements all project activities, including state/local/national public health and CBO partner focus groups, interviews, and convenings, negotiates written endorsement of final recommendations and roadmap, dissemination activities
  • Represents the project at technical, financial, strategic, and/or operational meetings focused on the assigned work
  • Recruits and engages project partners from CBO and state/local public health professional networks to participate in focus groups, interviews, and/or regional or national convenings on best practices and recommendations for strengthening the CBO/public health interface
