Communications Director, Office of State Representative Elizabeth Fiedler
DESCRIPTION
Working from the District Office, develops and executes a communications plan for the State Representative. Assists with outreach, community events, and direct constituent services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications (75%)
·Write weekly email to constituents.
·Plan, write, and edit biannual print newsletter.
·Maintain the Representative’s social media accounts (Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook), aiming for 25 Tweets (including quote tweets) per week, 10 Facebook posts per week, and 5 Instagram posts/stories/reels per week.
·Respond to constituent inquiries posted on social media.
·Assist the Representative at local events and take pictures for social media and other communications.
·Draft remarks for the Representative.
·Draft letters of support for community groups seeking grants and other types of support.
·Write media advisories and press releases.
·Plan and execute press conferences.
·Liaison with House Democratic Legislative Communications Office in Harrisburg.
·Draft letters of recognition for local honorees.
·Write and pitch op-eds to local media.
·Pitch and write content for other community and advocacy group newsletters.
Outreach/Events (10%)
·Attend and represent the office at up to two monthly civic/community meetings.
·Contribute to event planning.
·Staff community events as needed.
Constituent Services (15%)
·Monitor and respond to, and document walk-in, telephone, email, and social media constituent inquires.
·Process PennDOT, property tax/rent-rebate, SEPTA Senior Fare Cards, unemployment compensation, utility assistance, birth/death certificates, nursing licenses, and other constituent-related materials.
·Refer cases to legislative liaisons at PA government agencies and update constituents.
·Provide information to constituents on county and federal government issues and refer to appropriate offices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus a certificate/degree in office/clerical skills from a college or business/technical school; or one-year related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, political science, or another writing-intensive field preferred. Experience in communications, journalism, or public relations preferred.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and compose general business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from superiors, constituents, and the public. Ability to effectively communicate with the public from the perspective and voice of the Representative.
Interpersonal Communication Skills
Ability to listen, empathize with, and calmly address constituent issues and concerns. Ability to maintain a positive attitude and calmly respond to constituent complaints and frustrations. Ability to coolly focus on what can be done immediately to address constituent struggles. Ability to have a professional relationship with others and work effectively as a team player.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Ability to seek answers to novel situations and problems. Ability to concentrate for extended periods of time.
Computer Skills
Ability to complete tasks in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint), Legislative Data Processing Center, and CTS (Constituent Tracking System) software applications on a desktop computer system.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Special skills and abilities
Ability to type at the rate of 55 words per minute with no more than 4 errors preferred. Knowledge of shorthand/speed writing and/or dictation equipment very helpful. Ability to converse fluently in a secondary language is a plus. Experience with community, labor, or issue organizing a plus.

PAY AND BENEFITS
The salary for this position is $45,000 annually. Position includes excellent medical and dental benefits and the opportunity to enroll in a hybrid public pension retirement plan. Regular hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-4:30pm, with occasional fully compensated evening and weekend hours.
