College Internship Program - Summer 2023

Summary

The San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego County’s largest media company, seeks college-bound high school students of different cultural and economic backgrounds from throughout the county to learn about and produce community journalism.

The hybrid remote/in-person program will take place Monday, June 19 through Friday, August 11.

This program brings together highly motivated aspiring journalists with diverse backgrounds or life experiences to sharpen their skills in journalism and new media. The program provides an opportunity to work with, and learn from, some of the finest journalists in the business.

Interns will gain experience in reporting and writing, interviewing, researching, investigating, and covering news from a community perspective. Interns will also partner with a mentor from the newsroom to receive guidance as well as insight into the world of news.

Applicants should demonstrate a strong record of participation in journalism or community leadership. Students must be enrolled in a participating academic program through a San Diego County college or university and have a legal right to work in the United States.

• Cover letter
• Resume with a list of three references
• One-page personal essay (600 words) addressing: (1) What do you hope to get out of this internship, and (2) How have your life experiences affected your approach to journalism?

This is the pay the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of this posting. Compensation will be determined based on skills, qualifications and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position.
