The pay range listed above reflects the FULL pay range for this position. Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

The Code Enforcement Officer investigates complaints and violations of zoning, building codes, and other adopted ordinances in the unincorporated areas of Maricopa County. This jurisdiction is home to very diverse communities covering a large expanse that includes urban, suburban, rural, and remote desert areas.

We Require


  • High school diploma or GED
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
  • Two years of code enforcement experience in permitting or compliance inspections


We Also Value


  • Bilingual Spanish/English skills
  • Construction experience or investigative experience was obtained in law enforcement or regulatory enforcement setting
  • Experience dealing with the public


Job Contributions


  • Take photographs and measurements at inspection sites
  • Conduct site inspections on complaints received to determine if violations of regulations exist; drive to various locations within Maricopa County including remote locations
  • Investigate complaints and violations of zoning regulations, building codes and other adopted ordinances and regulations as they pertain to property within the unincorporated area of Maricopa County
  • Work with the County Attorney's Office to bring legal action against violators of zoning, drainage regulations, building codes and other adopted ordinances and regulations
  • Document findings and maintains computerized files of violation cases
  • Contact zoning violators and complainants under difficult circumstances and advises\ violators and complainants of findings and actions required for compliance
  • Answer inquiries from the public pertaining to regulatory and enforcement issues
  • Research property locations, ownership, permit history, and jurisdictional issues in order to determine the appropriate action to take in response to inquiries


Working Conditions:


  • May be subject to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, chemicals, oils, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Work will occur in office and field environment
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions: dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation, fumes, odors
  • May be subject to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
