The Certified Nurse's Aide provides non-professional nursing services and aid to residents with their activities of daily living (ADL) under the supervision of a licensed practical nurse or a registered professional nurse.

A. Education and Training - Successful completion of New York State Department of Health mandated clinical and written/oral exams for certification with current registration in good standing according to the New York State Department of Health Nurse's Aide Registry. The individual must maintain a minimum of six (6) hours of continuing education semi-annually.
B. Experience - Experience in a nursing home beneficial but will consider newly trained aides.
C. Character - The individual must possess good moral character, patience, and compassion for the elderly.

Essential Job Functions
A. Read, write, speak, hear, reason and remember.
B. Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, and lift heavy weight (more than 51 lbs.).
C. Observe and assess resident's condition, report findings accurately, document care given, and respond to requests for assistance in a timely manner.
D. Perform all job duties and responsibilities as outlined below in IV.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Certified Nurse's Aide is supervised by the nurse in charge of unit. The job duties and responsibilities are to be performed while observing the following standards: job standard (knowledge, ability, skills), technical skill, quality, quantity, judgement/problem solving, decision making, and initiative. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
A. Responsible for knowing and following resident's plan of care via verbal report, door cards and review of care plans.
B. Assist and/or perform the activities of daily living for assigned residents including, but not limited to, giving baths, oral care, personal care, dressing, feeding and toileting.
C. Assist and transport residents to therapy, activities, beauty shop and other destinations.
D. Distribute nourishments accurately and timely as directed in resident's care plan.
E. Assist resident with exercise, ambulation and range of motion as directed by the total plan of care.
F. Distribute and provide resident with clean linen and other supplies as needed.
G. Make beds and dispose of soiled linens.
H. Maintain resident rooms in an orderly, clean and safe manner.
I. Empty and measure foleys and collect specimens as needed.
J. Report and document the intake, output and unusual signs or symptoms and the total care given to the resident daily.
K. Give postmortem care and dispose of personal belongings as instructed.
L. Set up a completely clean unit prior to admission of new resident.
M. Clean utensils as needed.
N. Follow proper precaution/isolation procedures.
O. Turn residents and/or release restraints at scheduled times.
P. Communicate effectively and appropriately and adapt routine to the needs of the resident.
Q. Document on meal consumption with appropriate intervention.
R. Perform other related duties as required by their supervisor.

General Duties and Responsibilities
A. Participate in all department meetings, mandated Inservices, and assigned committees.
B. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with residents, registrants, family members, legal representatives and visitors.
C. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all personnel, including supervisors, co-workers and volunteers.
D. Follow all safety regulations and precautions at all times; use protective devices as required.
E. Wear and maintain proper uniform/clothing as established in the uniform dress code policy, including name tag identification. Maintain acceptable personal hygiene.
F. Maintain confidentiality and resident/patient/registrant rights.
G. Maintain confidentiality of all issues and subject matters, including records, reports, data and other related sensitive materials.
H. Maintain an acceptable attendance rate.
I. Follow all laws, rules and regulations of the Federal and NYS Health Codes in regard to the department and overall organization operations.

Working Environment
The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions and protection from weather conditions. The worker may also be exposed to odors and fumes or mists from medications. Works throughout the facility as needed. Certified Nurse's Aides are scheduled twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.

Exposure to Blood and Airborne Pathogens
This position has been categorized into Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Category 1: routine contact with blood/body fluids of persons living or non-living. Contact can be made while performing personal care, handling regulated medical waste and in clean-up of spills and other blood/body fluid accidents. Protective equipment should be utilized when performing these tasks.
