POSITION OFFERS A FLEXIBLE WORK ARRANGEMENT WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK FULLY REMOTE.
The Cloud Engineer within the Division of Marketing joins a team of front/back-end web developers and technologists to help host, secure, and maintain the central web presence of Syracuse University. They will work in collaboration with the Marketing Technology Director and Digital Development Team to assist with on-premise/cloud containerized deployments. They will manage production infrastructure using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and related technologies, including ECS, Fargate, Cloudwatch, RDS, and S3 in order to support the public marketing web presence for Syracuse University, including flagship channels (www.syracuse.edu) and schools, colleges and business units. The Engineer manages and delivers cloud-based applications and services and the infrastructure that supports them. Working closely with developers, operations staff, and other ITS professionals, they help ensure the effective and efficient delivery of cloud-based applications and services with a specific focus on web hosting environments. Successful candidates in this position thrive in a collaborative environment and have strong troubleshooting skills. In addition, candidates must be comfortable triaging issues and prioritizing responses.

Qualifications
  • AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure certifications preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of work experience related to software development and containerized applications with a focus on cloud deployments and application monitoring.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent amount of education and work experience.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Understand how to respond to system outages and use monitoring solutions to diagnose system interruptions.
  • Cloud certifications a plus.
  • Knowledge of AWS Administration and cloud security best practice using AWS Organizations
  • Prior experience with Infrastructure as Code applications like Pulumi or Terraform as well as Azure is helpful.
  • Experience documenting systems, architecture and solutions.
  • Experience designing, testing, and performing maintenance on systems and applications to ensure proper working conditions while providing minimal visible system or application outages.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to work well with others and independently as necessary.
  • Knowledge of software architecture, scalability and elastic deployments using containerized architecture.
  • Experience using log and monitoring solutions to provide alerts and dashboards for overall system health.
  • Ability to prioritize projects, evaluate requests and offer solutions.
  • Experience with deploying, maintaining and configuring AWS ECS/EKS deployments.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of cloud-based web and application hosting tools so that deployments can be as automated as possible. This includes proper cloud networking, security, logging and backups needs.
  • Collaborate with the Digital team and campus partners to help identify on-going functional needs and optimizations to environment.
  • Provide server and system administrator support for on-premise applications that cannot or have not been migrated to cloud environments.
  • Research and share best practices and trends for cloud computing, security and new platform features.
  • Work with central IT’s UNIX, virtual enterprise technology, and lnfosec teams to understand the University’s Virtual Hosting Environment (VHE) for server operations and monitoring emerging security threats, responding to and resolving vulnerability reports. The scope of services in these responsibilities includes web, application, database and legacy systems.
  • Work with Digital Development team to verify deployment requirements and integrate cloud tools into our workflows.
