POSITION DEFINITION: Performs skilled mechanical work in the repair, overhaul and maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered City vehicles, trucks, heavy and light equipment, small engines and related mechanical equipment.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Receives oral or written instructions from the Fleet Services Director, or his designee. Plans and organizes work procedures using repair manuals, charts and experience. Operates all City vehicles and equipment as necessary, discusses vehicle performance with operators, uses lifts or jacks to analyze, test, inspect and diagnose problems. Functions as a mechanic on any equipment in the field or at any shop the City operates. Mounts, services and repairs snow removal equipment. Uses mechanics hand tools and power equipment to remove, disassemble, repair, rebuild or replace defective parts or units. Performs engine and transmission overhauls, electrical system repairs and rewiring, brake system repairs, clutch repairs and replacements, hydraulic system repairs or replacements on sanitation trucks and similar mechanical work. Diagnoses major engine and transmission problems and prepare vehicle for vendor repair work. Uses hand tools and power tools to repair damaged vehicle bodies and body parts and auxiliary parts of equipment. Uses hand tools and power tools to repair damaged structural members of vehicles and equipment and perform all necessary welding. Grinds, files and sands required surfaces using power and hand tools. Resurfaces any damaged areas with a paint spray gun. Installs any safety or emergency equipment on vehicles. Performs routine vehicle maintenance work including tune-ups, lubrications, oil changes and tire changing and balancing. Follows standard safety procedures and regulations in the automotive industry. Completes all work orders and reports status of vehicles and equipment to the Fleet Services Director.
Additional Duties: Requisitions materials, parts and supplies from the Automotive Stores Clerk. Recommends to the Fleet Services Director and prepares vehicles and equipment for repair work by private vendors. Repairs and maintains power motors, snowblowers, pumps, grass mowers and other mechanical equipment. Makes safety inspections of City vehicles involved in accidents. Installs a variety of attachments to vehicles including police vehicles and equipment. Operates all equipment and performs general maintenance as required. When directed, assist in snow and ice control operations.
Supervised By: Receives general supervision from the Fleet Services Manager or his designee.
Thorough knowledge of the operation, repair and maintenance of motor vehicles, heavy equipment and other mechanical equipment. Thorough knowledge of metal fabrication, hydraulic and electrical systems. Experience in automotive welding. Skills in diagnosing and servicing automotive, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems. Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, specifications and equipment manuals. Ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing 25-50 pounds. Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain or snow.
High school diploma and/or completion of a vocational technical school program in automotive repair or the equivalent and four years experience as an automotive mechanic. Two years of vocational training may be substituted by two years of additional experience.
Valid Class A or B State of Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must obtain ASE Certification in diesel engines within 180 calendar days of appointment to successfully complete probationary period. Additional ASE Certifications are preferred but not required.
Note: Upon obtaining half of the necessary certification for ASE Master Medium Heavy Truck Mechanic status in the related job classification, the employee shall receive one (1) grade increase, payable with annual documentation that the certification is current. Upon obtaining full ASE Master Medium Heavy Truck Mechanic Certification in the related job classification, the employee shall receive one (1) additional grade increase, payable with annual documentation that the certification is current.
