Job Description
Investigates lawsuits against the Department. Interviews witnesses and employees. Analyzes and photographs scenes. Researches documents and prepares reports. Identifies relevant documents and SCDOT employees for attorneys. Testifies in court and depositions. Investigates tort liability claims. Duties relatively similar to lawsuit investigations. Administrative and Office Duties: Establishes and maintains files on each case. Prepares reports. Maintains assigned vehicle and other Department equipment. Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties. Relevant experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
Time management, excellent written and oral communication, and preferably experience investigating lawsuits.
Very limited supervision. Selected applicant must be able to independently evaluate and prioritize work, some of which may be sensitive.
Most work will be in a climate controlled office. Position requires travel in a State vehicle. Some travel will be outside of normal business hours, and may include some overnight travel. Investigations will require the selected applicant to safely perform job functions within the highway right-of-way in close proximity to traffic.
