Summary

The Center Director is a member of the University Human Resources division of Business and Finance, and reports to the Director of Child and Family Care. The Center Director oversees the operation and administration of the Center, including staff, budget, enrollment, facilities, procedures, and best practices for the program. The Center Director fosters collaboration with academic departments and students at the University that will best meet the needs of the Center's children, families, and student learners. The Center Director in the University of Michigan Children's Centers provides an early care and education program that supports excellence in learning. Through long-range planning, program development, and needs assessments, the Center Director provides leadership on early childhood education and care to meet the strategic plans of the Center and the mission of the University.

This position is located on site at our Ann Arbor, MI Campus Location.

What You'll Do

Oversee classroom scheduling using licensing and quality guidelines to ensure adequate staffing levels.

Manage employee timekeeping by reviewing records and approving time submissions.

Review and approve leave requests from staff, working with lead teachers and program directors to determine short- and long-term coverage needs.

Monitor and support staff performance and development. Facilitate goal setting and check in conversations for all regular staff, minimally three times each year. Conduct classroom observations regularly. Address staff performance issues and coach/support individual.

Manage the hiring and selection process for regular, temporary, and student staff including posting for available positions, recruiting new team members interview candidates, selecting qualified candidates for open positions, implement reference checks, and onboard new team members.

Ensure sound facility operations by periodically inspecting facility for safety hazards; coordinate ongoing and ad-hoc maintenance of the center by working with the Facilities Service Center and UHR Facilities to log issues.

Follow licensing operations in accordance with LARA. Disseminate information and training to staff related to licensing guidelines and overseeing compliance in classrooms and in the facility. In partnership with the program director and lead teacher, periodically audit classroom operations and take corrective action to ensure LARA compliance.

Ensure financial operations by overseeing the budget and approving expenditures. Oversee enrollment decisions including annual projections for age groups/class sizes, tuition increases, and enrollment adjustments throughout the year.

Facilitate community engagement and relationship-building efforts including regular and as-needed communication with staff and families; plan family and staff engagement events; advance the University's academic mission; networking within the UM community and establishing a presence and relationship with the community beyond the University; and support interpersonal conflict among team members.

Oversee strategic planning for the center including implementation of curriculum, assessment, and child screening tools; participation in state and national quality systems; center vision and goal setting; and ensuring center program alignment with UM and UHR Strategies.

Required Qualifications*

  • Three years of early childhood teaching that includes infant, toddler, and/or preschool
  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field meeting State of Michigan Licensing requirements;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for early childhood education.
  • Three years of experience in administration of a large children's center
