Departmental Overview
Berkeley Public Health (BPH) aims to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research. Established in 1943, BPH is a professional school on the UC Berkeley campus that comprises six academic divisions and nearly 30 research centers and programs. The Chief Social Impact Officer (CSIO) will have the overall responsibility to convene and lead collaborative efforts to elevate Berkeley Public Health's social impact and help the school become the best school for social impact. This role will work with the Dean, faculty, academics, staff, students, and community partners of the school and will lead existing efforts as well as cultivate, build, and maintain new opportunities. The current programs, efforts, and possible ideas for elevating the school's social impact that are in this role's sphere of influence include but are not limited to: 1) developing and executing on a strategic plan for school's social impact; 2) building a platform to support growth of broad-based local and global partnerships, especially community partnerships; 3) providing administrative leadership to the RISE office that supports mentorship, student practicum, career services, and leadership development; 4) organizing the various stakeholders and voices of the school and that of national/global public health partners to inform policymaking and systems transformation; and 5) contributing to fundraising and other revenue-generating efforts to support and sustain initiatives and ecosystems to help the school.
The Chief Social Impact Officer will lead a team and not be expected to do the above alone; they are expected to expertly engage with / influence / advise / lead various collaborators.
Responsibilities
STRATEGIC PLANNING:
The CSIO will lead their team and engage with stakeholders internally and externally to develop and execute a strategic plan to help transform Berkeley Public Health into a global leader in social impact. This will require developing a strategic plan with clear goals, strategies, and metrics, as well as building an ecosystem, for elevating and scaling Berkeley Public Health's social impact in the world.
CHANGEMAKER INITIATIVE:
The CSIO is responsible for coordinating the school's public health changemaker initiative. The goal of the initiative is to equip current and future public health changemakers with the knowledge, tools, and skills they need to help change the world. In partnership with the faculty, division chairs, and respective associate and assistant deans, the CSIO will create opportunities for students to develop practice-ready changemaker skills and competencies, engage more qualified public health leaders and practitioners in the training and mentoring of Berkeley Public Health students, and identify ways for students to apply these change-making skills to the betterment of society. They will also partner with the Assistant Dean for Education and directors of our online MPH program (OOMPH) in developing opportunities to expand the reach of Berkeley Public Health education to help upskill U.S. and global public health workforces.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
The CSIO is responsible for creating a platform to facilitate growing and strengthening the school's community partnerships. Berkeley Public Health faculty, researchers, students, and staff are already deeply engaged in many community partnerships, locally and globally. In partnership with faculty and staff, division chairs, and respective associate and assistant deans, the CSIO and their team are responsible for creating a platform, infrastructure, or ecosystem to facilitate and expand opportunities for faculty and students to engage in community-based participatory research and community-engaged actions, including but not limited to reducing administrative barriers, addressing academic disincentives, improving coordination and collaboration, developing and overseeing seed grants to incentivize academic-community partnership, supporting community, and facilitating collective impact.
HEALTH INNOVATION:
The CSIO will take a lead role in devising and creating an ecosystem at Berkeley Public Health that promotes social good by engaging with internal stakeholders and public and private sector partners to accelerate innovative solutions to health challenges. This includes working to cultivate a broad range of new opportunities and partnerships with other centers, institutes, schools, colleges, and universities, as well as collaborators in industry and government.
FUNDRAISING AND REVENUE GENERATION:
The CSIO will help with fundraising and revenue generation efforts to support strategic initiatives and systems building to scale the school's social impact. As a senior leader of the school, the role will partner with the Dean and the Assistant Dean of Development to represent the school and provide related content expertise in efforts that may include but are not limited to raising philanthropic gifts from donors or industry, securing contracts and grants from government agencies or foundations, expanding revenue generation from executive education, certificate, micro-credentialing, or self-sustaining degree programs, or negotiating sponsorship for health innovation startups or carried interest from venture funds.
PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE AND LEADERSHIP:
The CSIO is responsible for providing leadership and supervision for the RISE office. RISE provides wrap-around student support for practicum (internships), career services, and leadership development, bridging the gap between students' academic training and professional interests and goals. RISE also aims to help elevate the impact that our community partners and leaders in the field are making as they address pressing public health priorities.
POLICY AND ADVOCACY:
The CSIO is responsible for organizing and elevating the collective voice of Berkeley Public Health to help inform local, state, national and global health policymaking. They will help organize the school's voice in response to important legislative or judicial issues impacting public health, and coordinate with national and global efforts and initiatives to elevate the collective voice and impact of public health.
Required Qualifications
Substantive amount of leadership and senior level management experience in public health field and/or practice.

Demonstrated experience in leading change through strategic thinking and the ability to establish and implement an organizational vision, inspire and influence others toward the same goals, and be flexible and creative.
LEADING PEOPLE:
Demonstrated experience in leading people through a focus on diversity and inclusion and the ability to coach / mentor / develop others, build teams and collaborations, and manage conflict resolution.
RESULTS DRIVEN:
Demonstrated skills that contribute to successful implementations: continuous improvement, project management, managing accountability; and sound decision-making: analytical thinking, service orientation, and problem solving. Demonstrated expertise in the public health field and keeps up-to-date on relevant trends and information. Possess an entrepreneurial approach in identifying new opportunities and partnerships.
BUSINESS ACUMEN:
Demonstrated skills in resource management: budget and workforce; ability to plan/oversee finance and select/lead the staff to success, often through constraints.
BUILDING COALITIONS:
Demonstrated skills in political acumen and influencing / negotiations. Ability to build and maintain coalitions internally and externally and excellent skills in collaborating with diverse stakeholders to achieve common goals.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated mentorship skills in practice settings.
Demonstrated leadership skills in fostering inter-professional practice relationships and transdisciplinary/multi-sectoral collaboration.
Experience with diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ).
Experience with donor relations and fundraising either as a content partner and/or as a fundraiser.
Experience with negotiating internally and with local, federal, and state agencies.
Education/Training:
Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of academic program administration.
Knowledge of the entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem as it applies to public health; awareness of opportunities and the ability to seek, establish, and grow partnerships with industry.
Doctoral degree (DrPH, PhD, MD, JD, or other equivalent doctoral degree) and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $184,200.00 - $279,400.00
This is a 3-year, full-time (40 hours/week), Contract Appointment (with possibility of extended engagement), and eligible for full UC benefits.
